MANILA (BLOOMBERG) - Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is advocating to change the nation's name one day to "Maharlika" to move away from the country's colonial links.
Duterte's call echoes a push by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos to call the nation "Maharlika" which in the local language means nobility. The country, which was under Spanish rule for more than 300 years, derived its name from Spain's King Philip II.
Senate President Tito Sotto said Duterte's idea would entail rewriting the Constitution and will require too many changes. Duterte has also been pushing for changes in the nation's charter and shift to a federal form of government.

"Someday, let's change it," Duterte said on Monday (Feb 11) after distributing land titles in the Muslim-majority province of Maguindanao.
"Marcos was right. He wanted to change it to Maharlika because that's a Malay word."
Marcos, who was ousted from power by a peaceful uprising more than three decades ago, first suggested the name change to promote nationalism after he placed the Philippines under military rule.

Break from colonial past? Shut down 90% of the Catholic churches then.

And ban silly rituals like this:

And ban silly rituals like this:

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday made a renewed attack on the Catholic Church, suggesting that people should no longer go to the Church and instead make their own chapels at home.
Duterte said Church teachings are already “archaic” and people should instead "build a chapel in your own house and pray there."
"You don’t have to go to church to pay for these idiots," Duterte said in a speech during the groundbreaking of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project.

"Ang mga tao noon nomads. What do they know about the world today? Tapos pasundin niyo sa mga sinusulat ninyo? Totoo. How can people 3,000 years ago predict or project what is happening today?"
The President noted that while some priests are his friends, he does not encourage people to give money to bishops.
He accused the bishops of asking vehicles from government "knowing fully well that it is corruption because there is separation of Church and state."
"You have the balls, brave as you are, to ask for property of the government tapos magsalita kayong mga p******a ninyo, kala mo kung sino kayo," he added.
Duterte's fresh tirade against the Church follows his recent allegation against a prelate, who he said pockets Church offerings for the benefit of his family.

As long as singapore maintain its indian name and heritage, who cares what philippinos call their country. No more jobs for mandarin speakers only from now on. Its discriminatory.

If you Melayus are too stupid to learn Mandarin, wait till you see the jobs which require proficiency in a third foreign language. You can forget about applying for those jobs too.

Singapore gahmen should insist all civil servants use the nationsl language.

Maharlika comes from the Indian sanskrit word mahā. Indian honorifics influenced the Malay, Thai, Filipino and Indonesian honorifics.[3] Examples of these include Raja, Rani, Maharlika, Datu, etc. which were transmitted from Indian culture to the Philippines via Malays and the Srivijaya empire. Prior to European colonialism, South East Asia was under the influence of the Indosphere of greater India, where numerous Indianized principalities and empires flourihsed for several centuries in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam

Now you know why singapura has a indian name.
