Update: Story was updated at 1pm on 14 November to reflect the suspect being charged.
A 35-year-old man who allegedly dragged a Traffic Police officer along Geylang Road during an enforcement check was charged with one count of drug trafficking on Wednesday (14 November).
Azhar Amin, a 35-year-old Singaporean, stands accused of trafficking four packets containing between 167g and 250g of methamphetamine. The drugs were found in a residential unit at 159 Jalan Loyang Besar.
In a media release on Wednesday morning, police said that the officer had stopped Azhar’s car for an enforcement check at around 2.50pm on Monday, after the latter was spotted using his mobile phone while driving.
During the check, Azhar suddenly drove off and the officer was dragged along for about 50m before falling onto the road. The officer suffered a right-ankle fracture and multiple abrasions, and was sent to hospital for treatment.
Drug trafficking charge
Police located Azhar’s abandoned car along Toa Payoh Lorong 4 at about 5.10pm on the same day of the incident.
Through a joint operation by officers from Bedok Police Division and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), he was arrested along Jalan Loyang Besar at 2.15am on Tuesday morning. CNB seized suspected drugs and related paraphernalia found in his possession.
Investigations are also being conducted into Azhar’s alleged rash act that endangered the officer’s life.
Thanking members of the public who provided assistance to the injured officer, the police added that it has “zero tolerance towards such brazen acts which threaten the safety of our officers”.
Azhar’s case will be next heard on 21 November.
Drug trafficking carries a minimum jail term of 20 years and a mandatory 15 strokes of the cane. The maximum jail term is 30 years or life imprisonment.
