My estate has many poor people. Used to have only one
pawn shop to cater to the needs of those who become
desperate for money due to gambling, sickness or unemployment.
Guess what? Now there are 8 pawnbroker shops including
Money Max the one with Mark Lee as spokesman.
Some of them even offer the infamous " pay day loan"....
which has become symbolic of exploitation of the poorest workers who cannot make.
ends meet hence have to borrow to make ends meet.

If you take pawnshops as an indicator of financial strain, you can see how deep troublesaare running for this society. Money Max displays a photoshoped picture of
Mark Lee, I can't see pok marks on his face. The other day NUS researchers found that
poverty and working poor problem is far more serious than what govt data shows
...and sometimes it is easy to forget the severity of these problems as the facade of condos of thee richer class and the expensive luxury cars on the streets Photoshop away the strain of poverty in the heartlands.

you also have young pawning their collections and gifts
i was told many lost in gambing and other vices
yes, the proliferation of these shops is an indicator of a sick society

pawn shops are encouraging you to borrow...borrow and borrow
until you are drowned in your debts...no way out but to end it all...bomb!!!

It's not like these pawnshops replaced Ah long more like both are thriving as Singaporeans sink deeper into debt

Yes, at least pawn shops are catering to people who still have valuables to pawn.
It's their choice whether they want to keep the valuables or get cash.
I'm still wondering who the legal money lenders and those policy makers who approved their existence, think they are lending money to?

There's nothing wrong with pawn shops, in fact, one of my favorite pawn shops has been in business since the 1970s.

But to have an explosion in the number of pawn shops and moneylending shops islandwide within a few short years is quite telling, and only the daft ones don't see the casino link involved in this trend.
