Patient undergoes open-heart surgery ‘wide awake’
New Delhi, Dec 14
Doctors have managed to carry out an open heart surgery on a patient who was fully awake.
Doctors just gave the patient, Bolmax Periera who is a catholic priest an epidural injection so that he will not feel the pain of the procedure. The injection however did not block all the patient’s senses because he was able to feel the surgeons’ hand inside his open chest while hearing vividly every word that was uttered. He as well saw whatever was going on and he even did chat with the anaesthetist. He reportedly asked the anaesthetist for a pillow.
The new procedure has given doctors renewed hope that they can now perform an open heart surgery with minimized risk. This is the first time that the procedure has been carried out in such a manner. They believe that by keeping the patient awake and interactive helps in determining the state of the brain during the surgery.
Before the surgery, the Father was very excited about the impending surgery. He told reporters that he was looking forward to seeing his own heart during the procedure. That though was not exactly what happened because the surgeons blocked most of the details of the procedure from Pariera with a sheet.
