What CJ said when the prosecution appeal against $3500 fine for breaking a man's nose. Under the Penal Code, there is something called causing grievious hurt with caning as mandatory punishment if I am not wrong. Looks like a new suit of armour for the privileged elite disguised as upholding of the rights of impecunious peasants.

THE courts will have to at least consider making criminals pay compensation to their victims, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong has said.

In the past they had been reluctant to order this kind of compensation.
