UMNO was wary of Lau Cheebye and the PAP. MCA was always UMNO preferred partner. Moreover Lau Cheebye underestimated the political landscape of Peninsula Malaysia. He was cocky and over confident in his quest for a Malaysian Malaysia. He thought he and the PAP could replace Tan Siew Sin and the MCA in the alliance. But the Tunku would have none of it. Lau Cheebye and the PAP foray into Peninsula Malaysia spelt in the end of Sinkie Land ill fated merger with Mat Land. The late Tunku once mentioned he didn't trust LKY as a politician. In fact the Tunku was forced by the British into accepting Singapore. Tunku didn't want Singapore. He only wanted the Borneo states including Brunei.
