SINGAPORE: The National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU) on Monday (Sep 19) submitted an appeal to SMRT management against the dismissal of two SMRT staff over a fatal accident that took place at Pasir Ris MRT station in March.
Mr Melvin Yong, NTWU's executive secretary, said in a media statement on Monday that the union had submitted the appeal after reviewing the cases of the two staff.
"We have raised further queries relating to the incident in our appeal to the company," he said, adding that the union would "continue to render the necessary support and assistance to the affected employees during this difficult time" while awaiting SMRT's response.
Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Chan Chun Sing had said last Friday that the workers would have until this week to submit their appeal, and that union representatives would be meeting with SMRT to discuss the issue.
On Mar 22, SMRT trainees Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26, and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were killed after they were hit by an oncoming train near Pasir Ris MRT station. The two men were part of a team investigating a possible fault involving a signalling device on the tracks.
The public transport operator admitted after the accident that maintenance staff had not followed safety procedures.
Channel NewsAsia understands that one of the two staff members subsequently sacked over the incident was the driver of the train that hit the two trainees.
