Fcuking PAP really has no shame. They are the ones to cause the deaths of these 2 men by their profit driven motives for running SMRT. First the Minister for Transport appoints a fugly bitch who knows nothing about trains. She squeezes the profits out of SMRT by short cutting or skipping maintenance all together. Then its made worse when he appoints Dessie Quack who also knows shit all about trains and mass rapid transit. Has the PAP never heard of a Head hunting agency? You are telling me that in the world wide world, there are not many more better qualified people then Saw and Dessie? Lets call it what it is, when you get rid of all the experienced staff and replace them with trainees like these 2 who got killed, you have signed their death warrant. To further have the audacity to show up at their funeral is unbelievable. If I were the family member, i would have stoned these fuckers when they showed up. Look at the other MRT system in Asia that Penang Cow openly admires, the Hong Kong MTR. When was the last time they had a fatal train related accident? Hmm.........that would be never. How come a system run by Asians, carries more passengers then singapore's MRT, have a better fatality and accident rate and a better reliability record then the MRT? yet Hong Kong's MTR is not supervised or run by mulitmillion $ Ministers and CEOs. I hope Bukit Batok residents remember this when they vote.

SINGAPORE - Close to 150 well-wishers, including colleagues, close friends and relatives, went to SMRT maintenance trainee Nasrulhudin Najumudin's house in Tampines Street 12 on Wednesday (March 23) morning to pay their last respects.

Mr Nasrulhudin and his colleague Mr Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, died on Tuesday after an oncoming train struck them while they were walking along the tracks near Pasir Ris MRT Station to investigate a possible fault.

Many turned up at the Tampines home as early as 9am in the morning, sharing fond memories of the 26-year-old, whom they said had dreamt of joining the police force one day or furthering his studies at university.

Among them was his cousin Khairul Yazid, who grew up with him in Tampines, where they both live.

"He was considering between becoming a policeman and continuing his studies," he told The Straits Times.

"I looked up to him as an older brother," added the 22-year-old student, who rushed home from his hostel in Nanyang Technological University after hearing about the accident.

The mood grew sombre as Mr Nasrulhudin's body was brought back from the mortuary around 2.35pm, carried by close relatives.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) chief executive Chew Men Leong was among the visitors.

He said the LTA is helping with investigations by the Ministry of Manpower and police, but did not give further updates or a timeframe.

He added: "Right now, our focus is with the family and to support them."

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim and Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan also visited the 26-year-old's family at their home. Mr Khaw went to Mr Asyraf's funeral at Lengkong Empat as well.

About 200 friends and relatives had gathered there.

Mr Asyraf's family, who were in Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage, arrived at about 2.30pm in an SMRT taxi. SMRT chief executive Desmond Kuek also visited the family.

Earlier in the day, more than 30 friends and relatives of the two men also turned up at the morgue where the families identified their bodies.

Khaw’s ‘insensitive’ post in the aftermath of SMRT deaths draws flak

Transport minister Khaw Boon Wan has been drawing flak for conflating the tragedy of the loss of two young SMRT staff who died in a track accident and a milestone for the Downtown Line (DTL) in a Facebook post.

About 200 people have criticised the post since it was published on Tuesday night. Some of them claimed that their negative comments were deleted by the minister’s page administrator.

Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26, and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24, were killed near Pasir Ris MRT station earlier that day when they went down on the tracks to conduct maintenance checks.

Khaw began his post by saying, “Yesterday, Downtown Line (DTL) crossed an important milestone: 150 days without any major service disruption… This is the challenge of running a disruption-free rail service, not just here in Singapore, but also in other cities like Hong Kong or Taipei or London. Hence crossing each 100-day, 150-day and 200-day milestone is a timely opportunity to encourage them on towards the next milestone.”

He then said, “Sadly, news came that two SMRT colleagues were killed by a moving train while attending to a problem near Pasir Ris MRT station… our hearts are with the families and will do our best to support and assist them.”

He ended off the post saying that while he was at the DTL Depot to celebrate the milestone, his heart and those of his team who attended the event were “heavy”.

The majority of those who reacted to the post clicked the “angry” Facebook emoticon. Many commenters have criticised Khaw for being “insensitive”.

An Alvin Lim said, “Sir, I really don’t think you should be celebrating your achievements when two staff had just died. It’s rather insensitive.”

A Yong Jie Thng said, “No deaths should be downplayed by phasing it below another ‘beautified’ post. At least have the heart to dedicate one full post for the deceased.”

A Joee Goh said, “This post is highly inappropriate. Your priorities.. I can only say I am saddened by the fact that your milestones are way more important than our fellow singaporeans’ lives. Ask if any Singaporeans would regard your 100 days milestones more important than a life - be him or her a singaporean, a foreigner or even a tourist. You should remove this post Sir.”

Some of those who responded to Khaw’s post complained about having their comments deleted.

An Adam Ali said, “He sure got his priorities mixed up… self congratulatory first then say about death of the staff … add self censorship too by deleting unfavourable comments.”

A Patrick Tan said, “For over an hour many users’ comments have been deleted including 2 of my comments after 6.06pm but before 7.10pm yesterday!”

The Hong Kong MTR was built well before Singapore and still continues to maintain high standards. Since Temasek began controlling their assets to deliver returns, standards have dropped.

Most unwise sir. When you deliver a message, you must consider the audience. The nonchalant would consider the accident unfortunate. Issues of goverance too complicate lah. Like exam questions, you set them too hard the kids will just bochup.

Hong Kong MTR has never had a fatal rail accident despite much higher ridership. MRT has at least 3 already. Pay first world money for 3rd world performance.

The Hong Kong MTR was built well before Singapore and still continues to maintain high standards. Since Temasek began controlling their assets to deliver returns, standards have dropped.

The Singapore's MRT is less challenging to operate because it is supposedly newer and should be more advanced,
compared to the Hong Kong's MTR and Toronto's TTC (which is old and in need of significant repairs and upgrading),
as well as having to operate in more adverse conditions, such as heat and humidity, freezing rain, snow and extreme cold.

Yet the HK's MTR and Toronto's TTC probably has less disruptions.

The CEO of the TTC makes about $323,000 a year, whereas there are many Operators (bus drivers, subway drivers, etc.) and as well as Station Ticket Collectors who make more than $100,000 a year.
Whereas the CEO of Singapore's MRT makes about $2 million compared to the bus drivers and operators who may make about $30,000 to $40,000.
