Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong proclaimed during a lunch-time talk recently that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is looking for somebody “clean and green” in his 30s and 40s to take over him by the next general election.
Is Goh counting his chicks too early? How can he be absolutely sure that his party - the PAP will win the next general election?
Now, Singapore is not a feudal dynasty where the Prime Ministership is passed from father to son like a piece of family heirloom nor is it communist dictatorship like China where it is rotated amongst the party elders.
We inherited the Westminister model of government from the United Kingdom in which Prime Minister is selected from the political party winning the most number of seats in a election, usually the party leader.
