Singapore Budget 2016: Review employment pass, workfare income supplement criteria: NTUC

THE Singapore labour movement has submitted its seven-page list of recommendations to the Ministry of Finance ahead of Budget 2016, including requests to review the employment pass (EP) and workfare income supplement criteria.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) asked the government to re-look the EP criteria, with a view to "meeting the variegated needs of the industries whilst incentivising industries towards building a strong Singaporean core".

It also stressed the need to differentiate between companies that have shown a commitment towards developing Singaporeans, and to tighten enforcement on companies that have done otherwise.

NTUC asked the government to review the workfare income supplement criteria as well, so that it is based on basic wages rather than gross wages, which include income from overtime work.

"We note that this year will be particularly challenging for businesses especially since the issues facing our economy are structural, and not just cyclical. We are comforted that the government is looking beyond the short term to look at ways to restructure the economy on a stronger and more sustainable basis for the future," said NTUC in a press release on Thursday.

Its suggestions focus on four key areas: strengthening the Singaporean core, improving productivity, enhancing training and skills upgrading, and improving retirement adequacy.

i will believe what pap says when it puts what it said into action.

Before that, read what pap says with a huge dose of salt and scepticism. PAP has betrayed Singaporeans too often and for too long

I agree. Singaporeans must not believe pap's words.

Gosh, talk about too little too late. The Singapore core does hardly exists anymore in any private singapore company. This is not by choice. Government policies have made Singaporeans expensive, even if you could find any, which is not easy in some sectors. Hollowing out in IT, banking, medicine, and we are not done yet. Yes, you cannot build a Singapore brand without Identity and cohesiveness. We had this at one time, and things worked. Now, it's gone, look at where we are heading. Are our leaders serious ?

what you said sums up what pap has done to SG. pap has hollowed out of the SG core. Indeed it is too late salvage the SG core

Probably just wayang. Even if they are serious, how can you expect Sporeans to return after they have made a new life in Australia, Canada, USA, ..

Who wants to return to a polluted & congested Spore to fulfill reservist obligations ?

If you take this news report to show those private companies doing permit application for foreigners, they will laugh at you while very busy submitting applications for their clients.

Don't believe? Just go peep into these offices and see the piles and piles of applications being processed.

In the meantime, a big layer of PMETs are loosing their skills while sitting idle at home or driving Uber. How is that going to be recovered to support the Econ,or should these foreigners pull out when Sinkiepore sinks?

NTUC equals to PAP, only tos on NTUC and PAP's Payroll will benefit being a member of tis obsolete Union.
