Employer should take action against man who threatened teen on MRT, says Shanmugam

he actions of an MRT commuter who threatened a teenager who was wearing an expletive-bearing t-shirt was an act of "unacceptable bullying", said Minister for Law K Shanmugam on Tuesday night.

Last week, a video of a man who started threatening a teenager, who reportedly wore a t-shirt which had the words 'I'm F--king Special', on an MRT train circulated widely on social media.

In the video, another man named Elfy stood up for the teenager and confronted the aggressor.

Yesterday, the Law Minister weighed in on the incident and called for the aggressor's employer to take action against him.

"Came across this video. Unacceptable bullying conduct. People like this are sick in their mind. And try and take it out on others. I hope his employer will take some action, against him - he brings his organisation into disrepute," Mr Shanmugam said in a Facebook post.

Mr Shanmugam, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs, also praised Elfy for standing up for the teenager.

"Good to see someone, in this case Elfy standing up to this bully. His comments on the incident, that we are a multiracial society that should respect each other, are wise."

Mr Shanmugam linked to a report on Stomp that included Elfy's comments.

On his Facebook page, Elfy thanked those who supported his actions, saying: "To my all followers in Singapore, thank you for the support all have given to me.

"We are Singaporean born to live with multiracialism. So we grown up with multiracialism. ...Whoever is in trouble we come and help. who ever is successful we come and applaud. So this is how we live, love amongst each other."

He is the Law Minister and that bully broke the law ...so why doesn't he order the SPF to act? Instead he ask employer to do something. What can the employer do ...this is not an employment issue?

As Law Minister, he could ask the ICA to revoke that guy's work permit.

So, you see ...it is all WAYANG.

When ang moh does it it's not criminal, it's just a simple case of bullying. :D

I do not consider it bullying whatsoever. The teen was wearing a T shirt with a disgusting expletive. The Ang Moh had every right to voice his displeasure in no uncertain terms. Kudos to the Ang Moh for speaking up. We need more like him.

Remember that Singapore is the country that took issue with FCUK stores and the movie "The spy who Shagged me" for obvious reasons.

The teen should have been arrested by the cops the minute he stepped out of his front door with that T shirt on. Amos offended Christians whereas this teen offended the WHOLE OF SINGAPORE!

Elfy was in the MRT train earlier this week when he stood up for a young man who was being verbally abused by a Caucasian man who took umbrage with the t-shirt the young man was wearing.

The t-shirt said, “I am f-king Special”.

I cannot understand why Shanmugam would want an employer to take action against an employee who holds the values of Singapore conservatism so close to his heart.

Movies and songs which are far less offensive have been banned outright from the country.

Why a teen declaring in print that he is "fucking special" should even be allowed on the MRT is beyond me.

The Ang Moh should get a medal not the sack. Ang Mohs are the best!

Singapore upholds Janet Jackson ban

_1312706_janet300.jpg

Jackson's All For You tour starts in July

Officials in Singapore have thrown out an appeal against a ban on Janet Jackson's album, All For You.The Publications Appeal Committee, a panel of academics and professionals, considered the appeal by record company executives.

They decided that the lyrics of the album, particularly one song, Would You Mind, were "not acceptable to our society".

The record was initially outlawed because of its "sexually explicit lyrics". The song lyrics include
"I just wanna touch you, tease you, lick you, please you, love you, make love to you."

Downloadable

Distributor EMI is now attempting a compromise by trying to persuade Jackson's management to delete Would You Mind from the album.

This would make the album more acceptable in Singapore. However, Jackson fans can still access and download the offending song from the internet.

Singapore officials banned Jackson's previous album, The Velvet Rope, because three of its songs contained lyrics about homosexuality.

Singapore, a conservative city-state, is notorious for its tight controls on all media and for its promotion of family-oriented "Asian values".

Censorship

In 1963 it outlawed the Peter, Paul and Mary hit Puff, the Magic Dragon, fearing it referred to smoking marijuana.
An episode of Ally McBeal was banned because its titular character shared a steamy kiss with co-worker Ling, played by Lucy Liu.

The Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) said it had dropped the episode because it "centres around alternative sexual explorations".Two further episodes in the same series were given parental guidance warnings.

Austin Powers 2 was heavily censored and had its subtitle changed from The Spy Who
Shagged Me to The Spy Who Shioked Me.
Shioked means good or nice in Singapore's mix of English, Malay and Chinese dialects.
Singapore's board of film censors said the use of the word 'shagged' was "crude and offensive".

All pornography, even partial nudity, is banned, websites considered obscene or offensive are blocked by the government, and many films are censored or banned.

Jackson is still enjoying success, however. The album is currently riding high in the American charts at number five, after occupying the number one spot.

Her All For You world tour starts in Vancouver, Canada on 7 July. Singapore is not on the list of tour dates.

in sg, there are only 2 t-shirt prints that will bring out the entire poodle force. "i'm f-king special" is not one of them. :p

Law minister hopes action to be taken against train bully by employer

Last evening, Minister for Law, K Shanmugam commented on this recent incident where a Caucasian commuter scolded and taunted a young man because he was unhappy with a t-shirt the young man was wearing.

The video also showed a Malay man, known as Elfy, stepping forward and questioned the Caucasian man’s abusive attitude towards the young man. The two subsequently got into a bit of a quarrel before both parties were called off the train by police.

“Came across this video. Unacceptable bullying conduct. People like this are sick in their mind. And try and take it out on others. I hope his employer will take some action, against him – he brings his organisation into disrepute.” wrote Mr K Shanmugam, expressing his hope that the bully would have some action taken against him.

The law minister then turned to compliment Elfy on his action, “Good to see someone, in this case Elfy standing up to this bully. His comments on the incident, that we are a multiracial society that should respect each other, are wise. Elfy’s comments can be seen in the post link below.”

According to Nabilah Nasser who posted the video on her Facebook account, no action was taken on the rowdy man by the police officers and was allowed to continue his journey together with the rest of the passengers.

She said that police officers who attended to the situation appeared to be from the Special Operations Command. However, she noted that all that the police officers did was to ask for the Caucasian to calm down. When the passengers tried to show the police officers the video as a proof of what happened, the police officers refused to watch.

“They allow the angry old man to take the same train together with us. LOL. But after the police left, the old man walk away.” wrote Nabilah on her reply to TOC’s query.

SINGAPORE — Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam today (July 14) praised the man who stood up for a fellow passenger being bullied during a train ride, calling also for the bully’s employer to take action against him.

In a Facebook post, Mr Shanmugam described the bully’s behaviour was “unacceptable”. He was referring to a viral video showing a man berating a fellow passenger on the MRT for wearing a shirt with offensive words. A passenger, by the name of Elfy, was later seen confronting the bully. “Good to see someone, in this case Elfy standing up to this bully,” wrote Mr Shanmugam. “His comments on the incident (posted later on his Facebook account), that we are a multiracial society that should respect each other, are wise.”

Referring to the bully, Mr Shanmugam said: “People like this are sick in their mind. And try and take it out on others. I hope his employer will take some action, against him – he brings his organisation into disrepute.”

I think in the first place, it is our beloved elites that welcome him with open hand as a FT, how can now saying that his behavior is unacceptable?

You remember one Ang mo who behaved arrogantly and thuggishly towards the construction workers next to his house in Katong area and threatened to beat them up because of the noise
It is disgusting they are guests of our country and have zero disrespect for our law

Re: Behaviour of man who bullied passenger on train ‘unacceptable’: Shanmugam

Yes, Shanmugam, let out all the moral indignation pent up inside of you. Election draws near, time to score points. ;)

One possible explanation could be that the wife/gf/daughter/mother of the ang mo is named "Special". :D

As for dealing with him, if the ang mo has done something illegal, then get him through the law. Why call his employer? Another case of Government By Social Media?

Last week, a video of a man who started threatening a teenager, who reportedly wore a t-shirt which had the words 'I'm F--king Special', on an MRT train circulated widely on social media.

In the video, another man named Elfy stood up for the teenager and confronted the aggressor.

Don't complain, lucky the hero is a Malay, so shanmugan still give face and say the Ang Mo is sick in the mind. If the hero was Chinese, finish lah, he will say the Chinese is the bully and the Ang Mo was entitled to his own opinion.

The Law Minister is right. The matter can only be pursued by SMRT or the teenager. SMRT for filing a police report against the bully for disorderly behaviour, or better still, by the teenager for criminal intimidation. Can netizens persuade the teenager to do so?

The mata mata kias got to right to arrest or detain the bully as no report was lodged at that time by either SMRT or the teenager. The bully walked free.

Unless a report is made against the bully and he is charged in court to secure a conviction, there is nothing the pappies or ICA can do. If convicted, would the ICA deport him? This is the big question mark. No pappies Minister has ever declared foreigners with court conviction would be deported. So, presumably, they are still special breeds to stay around in the island even though they are felons.

Don't complain, lucky the hero is a Malay, so shanmugan still give face and say the Ang Mo is sick in the mind. If the hero was Chinese, finish lah, he will say the Chinese is the bully and the Ang Mo was entitled to his own opinion.

It makes no sense, leh. If hero was Chinese and the teenager clearly a Chinese, the pappies might say it is xenophobia in action against an elderly white foreigner.

As hero Malay, he praised a Malay for standing up for a Chinese. Racial harmony in action, unlike the current situation in KL where the Malays and Chinese whacked each other over a phone.

...Kudos to the Ang Moh for speaking up. We need more like him....The teen should have been arrested by the cops the minute he stepped out of his front door with that T shirt on. Amos offended Christians whereas this teen offended the WHOLE OF SINGAPORE!

In this age of pornography all over the internet and people using the four letter word like saying "hello", the ang moh was simply trying to bully the teenager. Would he tell an adult off for wearing the same T-shirt? He might get punched in the face.

Wearing the T-shirt only made the teenager look stupid but he offended no one. Amos used the four letter words often like breathing air.

K Shanmugam pass social responsibility to MRT bully’s employer

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam passed the bucket of social responsibility to the employer of the MRT bully who was caught on video heckling a young teenager for his t-shirt.

In a post on his Facebook page, Minister Shanmugam called the MRT bully “sick in the mind” and did not comment why didn’t the Police officers who attended to the incident issue a ticket for public nuisance. Under the Singapore’s Public Order and Nuisance Act, a person guilty of disorderly behaviour is liable for a fine not exceeding $2,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
However, even though there are legislated provisions to handle the MRT bully, Law Minister Shanmugam seems unaware and chose to comment that the troublemaker’s employer should act on the act instead.

Re: K Shanmugam pass social responsibility to MRT bully’s employer

The message should be that....

NO ONE should behave the way this guy, whether FT or local or PR and that he should be dealt with the full force of the law.
No mention should have been made of the race of ANYONE.

THE POLICE should have taken action; that they have refused to even view the video is an abdication of duty and should be punished.

HIS EMPLOYER has nothing to do with the idiotic old man's behaviour; he was out on his own private time. And if he is unemployed, he goes free?

So there is a Public order and Nuisance Act, then this bully who is sick in the mind should be charged under that Act as he is clearly disrupting order and being a nuisance.
