SINGAPORE: Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC's Member of Parliament, Michael Palmer, whose division has now been carved out as the Punggol East single member constituency (SMC), is looking forward to contesting it in the next General Election.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, he said for now, business will carry on as usual and he does not expect any major changes even after the next polls.

He said if he wins, the division would be run together with the main GRC, just like how Yio Chu Kang SMC and Ang Mo Kio GRC have been working together.

Mr Palmer explained: "Over the last three or four years, Pasir Ris-Punggol has grown tremendously with a lot of new flats coming up in Punggol as well as the Buangkok side of Sengkang. If you look at that, if they did not carve out one division, we would actually be enough for a seven-man GRC...it's just a natural progression due to population growth.

"I have spoken to my key grassroots leaders, they are all very excited. They were quite surprised because the talk on the ground was that Punggol South was going to be carved out but seeing Punggol East being carved out they see that as an affirmation and confirmation of the good work they have been doing and they are confident."

I suppose the ground at Punggol South wasn't as sweet as Punggol East back then as Punggol South. Fyi, the entire Punggol South constituency was once part of Cheng San GRC.
