Sightings of Cabinet heavyweights and lawmakers from the ruling party at his walkabouts and rally in Hougang have prompted some to ask Desmond Choo again if he was really his own man.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong accompanied Mr Choo at a walkabout, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Hean spoke at his rally and Minister of State for Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck helped give out flyers supporting Mr Choo in the estate.

Quizzed on the subject again on Monday afternoon, Mr Choo said he is still very much his own man because other People's Action Party MPs such as Mr Teo did not use their own personality to help him canvass for votes.

He said Mr Teo had asked him if he needed help and Mr Choo agreed.

“I think (Mr Teo) is also very keen to find out for himself, as a mayor, how he can also help and address certain issues,” said Mr Choo told reporters at PAP’s headquarters in Hougang.

"It's all about telling people who Desmond is. It's not about using their personality to canvass (for votes) for me.

"When I go on the campaign trail, it has always been me. That has not changed," Mr Choo said.

On Saturday, PM Lee visited residents in Hougang with Mr Choo, while DPM spoke at Mr Choo's rally on Sunday night.
