Japan is a homogeneous society with a strong work ethic and a proud tradition of excellence that has lasted for centuries. They aren't as powerful as they used to be but Japanese companies still rule the world in many areas.

Singapore is a rag tag collection of coolies from India and China.

Haha, thats the doomsday scenario the PAP and short-sighted business leaders want us to believe. The PAP is addicted to ruthless GDP growth and businesses are addicted to cheap labour to improve their bottomline. Now with all the SMEs here, Sporeans are already seeing their pay packets shrink and some are out of work.

South Korean did not yield to pressure from businesses to implement pro-business policies to allow businesses to import cheap FTs to boost their profits. The South Korean economy did not sink from the lack of labor force growth instead flourished with improvements in productivity and innovation. We need to bite the bullet and forge a more sustainable economy.

You may be right to a certain extent. But who is to blame? We know our forefathers were innovative pioneers, before the govt started screwing up our education institutions by putting emphasis on grades and paper qualifications and inculcated a culture of risk aversion. Not to mention the millions of rules and regulations that govern our lives. They wanted an obedient and sedated people.

No they weren't. There were a handful who were good traders but that was about it. The rest of them made a living as small time sole proprietors running provision shops or hawking food. Most were labourers, dockhands, rubber tappers, nightsoil carriers, black and white amahs, sumsui women etc.
