Why the award is only for China immigrants har?
It is important for immigrants to reach out to Singaporeans who have been here, in a spirit of openness and 'open hearts', said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
Addressing 1,300 guests at the Hua Yuan's association 10th Anniversary celebrations last night (September 19, 2010), he also gave out awards to four recipients for being Outstanding New Immigrants.
The awards recognise post-1980 immigrants from China who have made significant contributions to Singapore. The recipients were not just people who were eminent in their fields, but those who made an effort to integrate socially into our local culture, said the Hua Yuan Association.
63-year-old Dr Huang Xianya was one of the award recipients under the category for Science and Technology and has been living here for the past 19 years. He agreed that open-mindedness makes social integration easier for foreigners coming to Singapore.
The other award recipient from the category of Science and Technology was 47-year-old Dr Wu Yong Ling, a mother of two.
She came to Singapore with her husband from Beijing twenty years ago. In fact, her son is currently serving his National Service.
How have these two immigrants assimilated into Singapore's culture? Does Dr Balakrishnan's suggestion resonate with these Chinese immigrants?
