The recent tragic death of a 80 years old granny employed as a cleaner in the toilet bring to mind the constant and un-ending struggles of our elderly folks.

Probably the deceased would have been earning about $4.20 cts per hour.

A shameful, disgraceful and unbelievable sum by today's standards.

Pales in comparison to what our top leaders and civil servants earn today.

Even people on the dole (in true blue First World nations) get a better deal and that too for doing nothing.

Btw, there is another group of elderly people who seems to have been forgotten by the government.

These are the security guards in our midst.

These poor elderly and often sickly people work up to 12 hours a day. Taking their daily commute to work and then back home it works out to a total of 15 hours per day.

They are paid peanuts and working conditions are worse then slaves in the barbaric era long time past.

I spoke to two such people whom I met in the course of my evening walk.

They told me that they earn about $55/- per day for a 12 hours shift. Works out about $4/- per hour.

They are NOT PAID on their OFF DAYS.

More often than not they are treated with contempt by the bosses and staff of the place where they are stationed.

Some places don't even have proper guard rooms for them and they make do seating under huge umbrellas in the face of dust and rain.

When these tired guards develop an urge to urinate, probing eyes of the company staff look at them as if they are some unwanted swines out to dirty the toilets.

Their own supervisors and companies cheat them at times on their meagre wages.

There is no form of welfare for these people.
They are the forgotten ones at their distant and faraway posts.

Probably TIME has forgotten them.

Happening in a FIRST WORLD SINGAPORE where top civil servants are paid TOP SALARIES leaving the SERFs as a Forgotten Lot.

I do not know how many guards may have died due to heart attacks or lack of medical care.???

WHAT IS THE Security Industry Regulatory Dept (SIRD - a branch of the SPF), the MHA and the MOM doing about it.

It is useless to cut top post salary but fail to increase the lower end ones... Income gap will destroy this country... When people don't trust these top people...

Should not have cut their salaries in the first place. It was a silly exercise.

Worst still I believe our security guards are all Singaporeans and not FT. It's the same with taxi drivers - they got to be Singaporeans. Not sure about cleaners though. See a lot of FT cleaners.

Agree.

Their shifts usually starts from 7am and end at 7 pm. If you take another hour to and from work, comes up to 14hours. Although not a tough job, the long stretch of time is the killer.:o:(

Datok.

Disagree. Many security guards hired are mudlaysians especially Indians.

They are all too busy looking after the interests of CISCO and AETOS, both owned by Temasek to be bothered with the rest.

They were given side letter to sign on voluntarily OT when signing their Appointment Letter. Their basics can go as low as $6xx plus allowances. OT rates is based on basic salary. What do you think? No OT jiak lanjiao ah?

Still got fucktards here kpkb about those Panasonic Ah Tiongs low basic! :oIo:

I pity those local Sinkies in the security line..

Most of them have a 12 hr day or night shift.. From my understanding most of them earn less than 1.3 K a month working a tiring 12 hrs shift for 6 days a week.. They are also not paid during their off days or if they're on MC..

Only the selfish bosses of these security companies will strike it rich after obtaining a lucrative contract to manage the security of a particular place..

And also those Malaysian Kelings who'll feel rich from working as a security guard in Spore.. With their SGD 1.2 k pay per month, they will be very rich when they go back to JB and convert it to RM..

But our local security guards would still be biting their fingernails after drawing their paltry salaries every month..

To any PAP labour MPs reading this, I say Fuck Your Mother Cheebyes for treating our local Sinkie security guards like dirt poor slaves..!!!

I say increase the pay of these lower level workers like cleaners and security guards.. Give them a pay of at least 1.5K a month.. Provide them with proper company benefits.. Its time the Govt pays proper attention to these group of workers..

Don't give me the skills upgrading, inflation will happen if we raise the pay of these workers blah, blah , blah crap shit..

Just look at the recent case of an 80 yr old cleaner auntie who dropped dead while working.. She was obviously deprived of a proper company benefits just because she was just a lowly cleaner..

Then gahment will give her proper funeral rite

Is solving the low salaries of security guards and cleaners really that difficult that it remains unsolved since 1965?

Dear Fishypie,

Please don't use the example above as a means to conclude and perceive that all our poor guards are like them.

Our guards are humans and in need of their due benefits and proper welfare.

They are fathers, sons and brothers to other people. They are a suffering lot and need to survive just like us.

In every department and organisation there is bound to be the existence of some "rotten ones".

Even the PAP government has had corrupted ministers in the past.

The same is with the SAF, Police and other uniformed services operated by the Civil Service.

What is a miserable $55/- a day for a lengthy 14 hours of work - 12 hours on active static duty and 2 hours on travel.

The cheapest breakfast may cost $3/-, a pack of cheap cigarettes $8/-, lunch at $4/-.Tea and coffee breaks in between cost at least another $4/-

Transportation up and down costs at least $4/-. A dinner would cost a further $4/-

This works out to a total of $27/- per day. Only a paltry sum of $28/- is left. What about groceries and other bills to pay?

I am sure you kind folks are aware that a piece of $50/- note is nothing today compared to 1970's.

After speaking with some guards, I have noted that many are sickly, diabetic and suffering from hypertension. They need monthly medications. This don't come cheap.

The SIRD (Security Industry Regulatory Department) is also not helpful. Guards pay about $50/- for a WSQ Security Pass for a period of 5 years. Lost cards are renewed with a hefty $50/-. The SIRD is making money from these poor people.

As a body under the SPF, it should issue such cards free-of-charge just like warrant cards are issued to SPF policemen.

I pray that a day will not dawn when citizens calling for 999 police assistance has to pay money too for service of the patrol car. It will come to that soon....

Something has to be done for these forgotten lot.
PS: I am talking on behalf of our Singapore citizens engaged in this proffession.

The lowest paid security guards are the 2 wearing number 1 uniform at the entrance of the Istana.

Bro Koh, i was Looking at the Lighter side of things..but who knows, maybe i couLd be a jaga for your Condo sometimes in future..;)

No Bro Fishypie,

It will be me that will look after your condo.

I am already an Ah Lau...

I wish the Lord will one day make you an owner of a condo.

God bless you all.

SIRD is now called Police Licensing Regulatory Department.
Admin fee for the ID card is $20 paid to Union of Security Employees. First replacement is $40.
Not sure ultimately who keeps the money though.
