Singapore President Halimah Yacob has been approving 4 withdrawals amounting to over S$92 billion from the national reserves without knowing how much there are in there.
In Parliament yesterday (Jun 5), Workers' Party MP Pritam Singh asked Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat whether if the Lee Hsien Loong-appointed President knows how to justify the spending:
"What is of interest is the decision making process behind the allocation of this amount. How did the government settle on it? And on what basis was it justified to the President?"
Minister Heng Swee Keat had no response and kept quiet.
The Opposition Leader also asked Minister Heng Swee Keat to clarify his comment when he told the state media earlier that Singapore's financial position will be "a lot weaker".
Minister Heng Swee Keat again did not respond and kept quiet.
WP MP Pritam Singh then continued firing away at the PAP, noting that the government is unprepared for a crisis after Malaysia banned Malaysian workers from going to Singapore:
"The current situation has revealed a lack of public crisis preparedness. For example, because members of the public did not completely understand what DORSCON Orange meant, many rushed to panic buy, until authorities explained that the DORSCON Orange level had also been applied during the 2009 H1N1 outbreak. And when Malaysia closed its borders almost overnight, many companies were left scrambling to house their Malaysian employees who crossed the Causeway every day for work."
