Last week, a story of an abused maid was shared by migrant worker support group Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2) after they had stepped in to rescue the worker.
According to TWC2, the maid had not had a single off day in 2 years, was starved, constantly watched and unable to leave her employers' home.
Her pay was withheld at some times and unfair deductions on her salary were made. TWC2 explained that after over 2 years of being trapped in her employer's home, she only had $4,000 to return home with and she flew back home on December 19.

After the story was shared widely online, the Ministry of Manpower clarified that the maid was not abused or trapped and she had simply lied to get out of her employment contract.
A spokesperson from MOM replied to queries about the issue to raised by TNP and the spokesperson was quoted as saying:
"In handling cases, it is important to remain dispassionate and objective, neither favouring the employer nor the employee.
It is regrettable that TWC2 was so eager to believe a story of alleged abuse and to publish a grossly untruthful account on its website.
At no time did Miss Wahyuni indicate that she was confined by her employer against her will in the house."
The spokesperson had explained that the worker did not accuse her employer of having committed any offences and they further claimed that Miss Wahyuni was "neither mistreated, abused, nor did she allege that she was confined against her will."
According to MOM, she just wanted to return home and terminate her contract.
They also clarified that they had taken official statements from Miss Wahyuni in Malay, a language that she understood and she confirmed that the contents of her statement were true.
