Open verdict on remains

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong

AN OPEN verdict was recorded on Wednesday on the skeletal remains of a man found in a Woodlands flat last May. A Housing Board contract supervisor tasked to check on the unit at Woodlands Street 13 on May 7 found the bedroom in a burnt state and an object which looked like a human body lying near to some burnt debris. A burnt cigarette lighter was found near the residue and a metal container found near the victim. The whereabouts of the owner, Mr Wong Kok Cheong, 48, is unknown. DNA analysis of the deceased's bone marrow was different from the DNA profile obtained from the shavers and comb seized from the owner's flat. It is understood that the Housing Board had wanted to repossess the unit after the owner defaulted on his mortgage payment of about $139,000. The cause of death could not be ascertained due to the extensive decomposition, but the deceased could have died after inhaling fire fumes.
