We all know that the Prime Minister received a whooping “mandate” of 66% of the valid votes cast in the last General election. If you factor in those voters who did not have the opportunity to vote, the percentage drops to 29%.
It has been almost three years since the last general election. What do Singaporeans think of Mr Lee Hsien Loong’s leadership ? What are his approval ratings ? Seriously, nobody including the Prime Minister himself knows the answer !
In the West and most Asian democracies, polls on approval ratings of leaders are conducted frequently for the government to gauge public sentiment and response to their governance. It is a barometer of support from the ground for their policies and can be easily garnered through telephone surveys. Only dictatorships like Burma and North Korea see no need such such surveys.
