Chitchat One in three seized vapes contains surgical anesthetic—here's how Singapore created this crisis

young sinkies without sanskrit names and uptron degrees know they are doomed. resort to “quiet vaping” to die a peaceful death?

Sinkie kids are lucky because most of their parents are still well financially. Else all the strawberries kids how to take hardships?
not most but many landed home owners are better off financially. those parents living in hdb flats are the majority and less well off. they comprise more than 69% of all parents.

Good article.

Many switched to vaping because of the high cigarette prices in Singapore.

By and large, vaping is healthier than smoking because it contains no tar. It doesn't stink as much too. Unlike many countries, Singapore don't approved vapes for retail sales because we do not want to lose the tax receipts from cigarette sales. Eg. in South Korea, only approved vapes are sold by reputable brands in their retail stores. They test and report the contents in the vapes.

In our illegal scene, to get repeat customers, unlicensed vape sellers begins to add synthetic drugs which costs less than $10 a litre after dilution. Then customers will return to buy from them because of the extra "kick" and "high".

Weed is also very popular now in our night spots and university dorms. Weed is pretty much like the early days of vaping now. Due to their soaring popularity with expats and students, police has a very long checklist to adhere and will try not to arrest anyone unless they are peddlers or cause harm to others. Soon, weed sellers will add other synthetic drugs to their weeds to get repeat customers.

Cigarettes generate tax revenue. Vapes don't.

Revenue more important than people's health.

Must prioritize revenue over people

Actually pap can do better but they are constantly having delusional thinking that they want zero nicotine users in Sinkapore. But refused to allowed alternatives nicotine products to be sold other than cigarettes. That is why progress has been so slow. Sweden on the other hand allows alternatives and their smoking population is only 5% of the population which by world standards is considered smoke-free.

But scholars thinking by providing no alternatives, they are able to get smoking rates down. Only way is asking people to smoke cigarettes only or quit cold turkey.

If you see Japan smoking rates. It has always been very high but after they approved heated tobacco to be sold. Cigarettes sales volume dropped dramatically by 52% over a period of 8 years. Which is less smoking population than in Singapore now. No wonder when you go to Japan these days. You do not smell much tobacco smoke.

These are tobacco and still taxable so pap will not lose their tax dollars. But pap still adopting the same thing from 10 years ago and achieved nothing. I remember news was asking pap to if they would approved heated tobacco in year 2015 and they did nothing. And 10 years forward Japan has less cigarette smoke than Sinkapore and Sinkapore achieve nothing.

"Our own Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction research, which compares sales volumes, further emphasises the changing nature of cigarette and HTP consumption. Using market data released in annual and quarterly reports by Philip Morris International and Japan Tobacco, the sales of individual cigarettes was around 182.34 billion units when heated tobacco products started to become more widely available in 2015. By 2023 this had dropped 52% to just 88.1 billion units, a fall of 94.2 billion units, while the sale of the tobacco sticks used in HTP that year had risen to 72 billion units in under 10 years."

but at least they are more willing to feed jobless kids these days. Back 20 years ago if you are jobless your parents will not have the money to feed u at home.

They can do more but choose to be lazy. Heated tobacco like what they use in Japan is still taxable and reduced cigarette smoke.
