Chitchat One-Eyed Jason Chee Wins Gold For ASEAN Para Ping-Pong! Majulah PAP!

SINGAPORE - Para table tennis player Jason Chee clinched his first individual gold medal at the Asean Para Games on Friday (Sept 22).

The 34-year-old emerged top of the men's individual Class 2 event. Competing in a five-player round-robin group , he secured the gold after beating Thirayu Chueawong 11-8, 11-2, 12-10 in Kuala Lumpur.

Chee won all his matches, as he had earlier defeated Thinathet Natthawut of Thailand (11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 5-11, 11-9), and Singapore's Eric Ting (11-6, 11-8, 11-5) and Darren Chua (11-4, 11-7, 11-6).

In the sport, paddlers in classes 1-5 compete in a wheelchair. The higher the number, the greater the level of physical mobility.

The victory was Chee's second medal at the ongoing APG, as he had won the men's team TM1-3 bronze on Wednesday.

At the last Singapore APG held in 2015, Chee won an individual silver and a team gold, while he took a team bronze at the Myanmar APG in 2014.

Chee was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma (a cancer of the eye) in late April, which resulted in him losing his right eye.

He had already lost both his legs, left arm and three fingers on his right hand due to a mishap which happened during his work on board a Republic of Singapore Navy warship in 2012.
