POLICE called to the foot of a block of flats in Marsiling early yesterday morning, where a man's body was found, were led on a trail to a Dunearn Road hotel where another death was discovered.
The man, Mr Shariffudin Abdul Kader, 56, was found on a grass patch near Block 35, Marsiling Drive, at about 5am. Paramedics who arrived on the scene pronounced him dead about 10 minutes later.
my paper understands that it was the discovery of a hotel key card on Mr Shariffudin's body that led the police to a fourth-floor Executive Club room at the Copthorne Orchid Hotel in Dunearn Road.
There, they found the body of his 19-year-old son, Mr Shah Amin, facing upwards on a king-size bed. He was dressed in a white T-shirt and black bermuda shorts, similar to what his father had on when the police found him. Mr Shah Amin, believed to have been intellectually disabled, had visible injuries on his neck. There did not appear to have been any signs of a struggle.
He was pronounced dead at about 7.30am.
The 440-room four-star hotel is popular with tourists as well as Singaporeans, and is slated for redevelopment into a condominium later this year.
Hotel staff said that Mr Shariffudin had checked into the room alone just after 8pm last Saturday. He was believed to have been a businessman and had booked a one night's stay for himself. It was not unusual.
Mr Shariffudin had arranged a similar stay at the hotel in June last year, said Mr Gerry De Silva, head of corporate affairs of Hong Leong Group Singapore, which operates the hotel. Mr De Silva said that the hotel staff did not sense anything amiss last Saturday night and that Mr Shariffudin was even seen smiling when he checked in alone.
The staff, however, did not see Mr Shah Amin enter the hotel.
Yesterday afternoon, it appeared to be business as usual at the hotel, which is located behind Raffles Town Club. The only sign that something had happened was the presence of about four police vehicles parked near the hotel's main entrance.
At the family's condominium unit in Amber Road, Mr Shariffudin's wife, Madam Jasmine Abdullah, declined to speak to reporters yesterday.
Outside the unit, there were about a dozen pairs of shoes and slippers, arranged neatly in two rows. However, little sound came from within.
Later in the day, a man, who refused to be identified, finally came to the door only to say that it was a difficult time for the family.
It is not clear whether Mr Shah Amin was Madam Jasmine and Mr Shariffudin's only child.
The police have classified the two cases as unnatural deaths and have not ruled out the possibility of foul play. Investigations are ongoing. [email protected]
