old folks should play more mahjong

Re: Sleeping In Void Decks

Then, you will see more old men being divorced by their old spouses, and disowned by their own grown up children as well as sleeping in void decks, under the bridges, in tunnels, etc.

I was actually referring to those widowed or divorced.

Mahjong is the one Chinese game that proves Chinese wisdom and strategem over non-Chinese and westerners. Chinese have always figured out how to play western games within hours or even within minutes. Westerners still haven't figure out how to play mahjong after centuries. Look at all the crap western computer mahjong games. They took the tile designs and made the game into trying to find and match off four same tiles. No Chinese above 3 years old would play that sort of crap.

Well said, and absolutely spot on.

The only exception however is Chess. No matter who will take a long time to master either Chinese or Western Chess.

The greatest intellectual game is Go (WeiQi) and it has no parallel in this world.

Go (WeiQi) is the most simple and yet most stragetically challenging and taxing game. It's a dying game though, unfortunately. Fewer and fewer people are playing. To summarize, the objective is to surround and capture. There're no rank differences in the pieces like chess. Reversi was a game invented by Westerners who saw the game but couldn't figure out how to play it. The Chinese WeiQi is totally the same as Japanese Go. I played once with a Japanese uncle and lost like hell. The Japanese Shogi is even more interesting. Too bad, I learned a little only and didn't have enough time in Japan to learn more.

Its a pity if Go dies out. Such games must be kept alive and promoted. Unfortunately the younger gen don't seem to appreciate the beauty and timelessness of such games.

i play mahjong often with my gringo buddies - 2 americans, 1 brit, 1 french. since there are 5 of us, 1 will excuse himself and watch from the sidelines. they don't have problems learning to play. the only challenge is the deck of "mun" or "bun" (10k) tiles, where 1 thru' 9 tiles are carved in chinese numerals. if they are carved with western numerical superscripts, all problems solved.

The Kearny and Stockton areas got some Mahjong joints. You should have tried too. ;)
