A PAP supporter Stanley Lee has proposed renaming Singapore’s international airport after PAP paramount leader Lee Kuan Yew in recognition of his ‘contributions’ to Singapore.
In a letter published in the Straits Times Forum today, Stanley praised Lee for being Singapore’s “living history” and “highly regarded by world leaders for his vision and measured opinions.”
The strongman has voluntarily relinquished his ministerial portfolio in the new Singapore cabinet though he remains a MP of Tanjong Pagar GRC. At 88 years of age, Lee is now the world’s oldest living MP.
“At this juncture, we and the Government must find an appropriate way to recognise him for his contributions to the nation so they will remain etched in the minds of current and future generations. Let us take this opportunity to rename Changi Airport Lee Kuan Yew International Airport – an apt choice to highlight his vision and leadership. Honour him while he is still with us,” Stanley added.
Stanley appears to forget that we already have an institution named after Lee – the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy under the National University of Singapore.
It is sad that after fifty years of nation-building, Lee’s long shadow continues to loom over Singapore. Singapore has come so far today because of its diligent, thrifty and honest people and not because of one man. Our beloved nation is much larger than any party or person.
Do you agree with Stanley that Changi Airport should be renamed as Lee Kuan Yew International Airport?
