Authorities in Jinghong, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, say that a suspicious object found in a dish in a school canteen that was photographed and spread over social media was not a condom and further investigation is under way, media reported on Sunday.

The education bureau in Jinghong told the media on Saturday that they could not find the object because it was thrown away and the garbage in the canteen was taken away, people.cn reported. The student who found the object could not be sure that it was a condom, said the bureau.

The student, surnamed Yan, from a vocational high school in Jinghong, found an object in a dish in the canteen on Thursday. One of his classmates thought it was a condom and took a picture of it. The object was then thrown away.

One student who heard about the incident uploaded the picture on social media on Friday with words saying that it was "terrifying, embarrassing and disgusting" to find a condom in a canteen meal.

The picture was reposted by many Web users. Some criticized the school for not fulfilling their responsibility in supervising food safety. The vocational school started an investigation and asked the canteen to avoid any possible incident.

The school told the media that although the object was not identified as a condom, the incident would serve as an alarm for the school to attach more importance to food safety, according to people.cn.

The final result of the investigation will be released in days, according to the education bureau in Jinghong.
