S’poreans set up local ‘Obedient Wives Club’

The Obedient Wives Club created a controversy in Malaysia as some feel it degrades women.

Three Singaporeans have taken it upon themselves to pioneer a local branch of the controversial Obedient Wives Club (OWC).

Dr Darlan Zaini, a literature professor, Hamidah Ari and her brother, Azman Ari, are representatives of the newly-formed club in Malaysia that teaches wives to be more subservient to their husbands.

The OWC has been slammed by critics everywhere, saying that it degrades women by saying that it is the wives' duty to make love better than "first-class prostitutes" to solve familial problems.

According to The New Paper, Dr Darlan believed that with obedient wives, husbands are more likely to behave themselves and would be more responsible towards their families.

The 7o-year-old said: "Some people agree, while others don't. More importantly, we believe that obedient wives can avoid various detrimental social problems such as prostitution, divorce, gambling, domestic violence and others."

Already, ten families have indicated their interest in joining the club.

But former registrar of Muslim marriages Tarsuni Maulan has reservations about the group.

He told the same paper, "Did the OWC base its findings on research or hearsay? I'm just concerned that by making such statements (on how wives should treat their husbands), it would make men big-headed and give them a free rein to mistreat women."

Last week, the OWC, set up because some felt that the increasing divorce rates were due to 'disobedient' wives, became the ridicule and amusement ever since it was launched in Rawang, Malaysia.

Its international vice-president, Dr Rohaya Mohamed, said that wives should be encouraged to be more subservient to their Muslim husbands.

Those who want to join can join. Those who don't agree, do not have to join. It's a private thing. Acceptable.

Is there is Disobedient Husband's Club?

Cheers!

A good wife

Share a common dream with her husband (don't be same bed different dreams)
Ensure the home is a clean and comfortable place
Understand her husband's fear and understand her husband's problems
Share the effort in building a better future for the family
Good in bed

Don't have to do everything listed. 1 is enough.

But we already have an Obedient 'wives' club here for years, it used to be 66.6% membership, recent times, it had fallen to around 60%....

Obedient Wives Club: We are misunderstood
By Ewen Boey | SingaporeScene – 22 hours ago

UPDATE

Wivesclub_110245.jpg

Malaysians Ishak Md Nor, 40, (2nd L) and his two wives, Aishah Abdul Ghafar, 40, (C) and Afiratul Abidah Mohd Hanan …

Representatives of the controversial Obedient Wives Club (OWC) are disappointed with the statement by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), but will continue its plans to set up a Singapore branch.

Singaporeans Darlan Zaini and Azman Ari clarified that their intentions are misunderstood, and their proposed club here will not just focus on sex issues, but also on helping people have harmonious families.

"I feel very disappointed. What we intend to do is totally different from what Muis is saying," said Darlan, 70.

Muis released a statement on Friday, slamming the OWC for its view that a satisfactory sex life is the main solution for marital problems, calling it myopic and against Islamic teachings.

Darlan and Azman said in separate interviews with The Sunday Times that sex is not the main focus, but rather, the importance for the wife to consent to the husband's needs.

Darlan, who has a PhD in literature, said he agrees with Muis that sex between spouses is a form of ibdah (blessed deed in Islam). However, he added, "In Islam, if the husband wants sex and the wife is not in the mood, she has to give in to him. If not, the angels will curse her. This is not good for the family."

Both men emphasized that in Islam, the husband plays the role of the leader and the wife, that of the follower.

However, Azman said that before the man can be a good husband and leader, the wife has to first be obedient.

"If the wife is obedient, then God will give blessings to the family and most likely the husband will treat her fairly," said the 45-year-old businessman.

Darlan, Singapore's representative for the club, plans to set up OWC as a society here together with sibling pair Azman and Hamidah Ari.

The vice-president of the club's Malaysian chapter, Dr Rohaya Mohamad, made waves at the launch of the club last month when she said that good married Muslim women should obey and serve their husbands like a "first class prostitute" to prevent him from straying.

She added that women should put an emphasis on their sexual prowess beyond the traditional "good mother or good cook" roles.

"A good or religious wife is also sexually good in bed," she said.

The OWC was formed by Global Ikwan, a group that promotes polygamy. The latter is an offshoot of Muslim group Al-Arqam which was disbanded in 1994 after Malaysian authorities said it was preaching deviationist teachings.

Its founder, Haji Ashaari Muhammad was barred from entering Singapore that year. He died last year.

Azman clarified that the OWC's Singapore representatives have nothing to do with A-Arqam, although there are members of Global Ikhwan.

"Some of them in Malaysia were ex-members of Al-Arqam but we are not related to Al-Arqam. I don't know their teachings."

Azman and Darlan said they will still set up their club despite opposition from Muslim groups here.

"Maybe we will change the name. OWC is too controversial. We can use a simpler name like 'Happy Family' or something," said Darlan.
