IT WAS a much subdued affair at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences canteen yesterday as a student-run campaign to dispel the stigma of eating alone was held.

Over the course of the four-hour event, about 40 people turned up at the canteen wearing a T-shirt imprinted with the words 'I dare to eat alone', sitting at various parts of the canteen to have lunch alone.

Organisers of the Eating Alone In The School Canteen campaign, Heng Choon Peng and Jude Alphonsus Tan, both 24, and Sonia Oh Ting Wen, 20, felt that the turnout could have been better.

'I think there is room for more improvement as we only met half of the target. But I guess the awareness is definitely more than T-shirts we sold.'

They managed sell 50 T-shirts, out of a targeted 100.

Fellow participant and third-year sociology student Sabrina Ng, 21, said, 'This campaign really encourages people to get out of their comfort zone. I think it's because Singaporeans are more conscious of themselves, and therefore find eating alone to be a bad thing when it really isn't.'

While uni students around the world concern themselves with world climate change, poverty issues, ideas to feed the poor... this farker campaigns on eating alone.

Precisely.

There are so many social issues, this farker wants to pursue some mindless, petty agenda that has no relevance to real life.

Far better for this farker to spend time honing his social skills and beefing up his resume so that he can compete against foreigners for jobs, rather than waste his precious life doing these kind of silly attention-seeking antics that lead to nowhere at all.

This campaign IS really inane. Are there students who fear eating alone? What's become of our undergrads that they fear doing simple daily activities by themselves? If eating alone is an issue and a real fear, isnt it more constructive and productive to encourage other students to be more collegial and fraternise with the lone eater, offering to join him and take him out of his misery (if there is any) than to encourage lone eaters to go on eating alone? The campaign leaders should first determine the reasons that people eat alone - is it out of choice, or the person is basically anti-social, or what. If he opts to eat alone, then the campaign is redundant.

Do you fear masturbating alone?
