Is this fucking PAP double standard? Roy got fired double quick time by TTSH for far less then that.

SINGAPORE - An assistant law professor from the National University of Singapore (NUS) was convicted on Friday for assaulting a cabby while drunk, leaving his victim bloodied and needing multiple stitches.

Sundram Peter Soosay, 43, had boarded Mr Sun Chun Hua's taxi in the wee hours on Christmas Day. Intoxicated with alcohol after a Christmas Eve gathering, he later vomited in the cab.

He then alighted near King Albert Park along Clementi Road and walked away without paying his taxi fare. He handed a $50 note over after the 70-year-old cabby chased him and threatened to call the police. Mr Sun returned to his cab to get change.

Soosay then allegedly struck Mr Sun from behind, straddled him and punched him on his face repeatedly.

An eye-witness saw a scuffle break out between the two. While uncertain of who started it, the witness saw Soosay kneeling down and striking Mr Sun on the head several times with his fist.

The court heard that he then ran towards them and shouted at them to stop the fight, as Mr Sun "did not look like he was capable of defending himself".

Soosay's lawyer said his client had walked away after the scuffle and did not attack the cabby.

District Judge Victor Yeo, in finding Soosay guilty, said that his testimony was "riddled with hindsight reasoning, convenient conjecture and hypothesis".

Tearing down his defence, District Judge Victor Yeo said Soosay's testimony was inconsistent with his first statement to the police.

"Despite the accused's intoxicated state, he seemed able to recall with great clarity how Mr Sun had behaved aggressively towards him," he said.

He added that Soosay had made no mention of these details in his first statement to the police, but had instead said he was so drunk that he could not remember what actually happened.

He also noted that Mr Sun was of a fairly advanced age, and it would have been foolish for him to start a fight with his passenger - who was larger in stature - after he had received money for the taxi fare.

Soosay will be sentenced on June 26. He faces up to two years in jail, a fine of up to $5000, or both.

In a statement on Friday, an NUS spokesman said Soosay has been suspended without pay, and the university "will now determine what further disciplinary action should be taken".

Originally from Malaysia, Sundram Soosay has lived in Scotland for the past 20 years. He graduated from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, before going on to spend an extended period at Edinburgh University, where he obtained his LLM and PhD, and later held positions as a research associate and a teaching fellow. His research interests are in Jurisprudence and philosophy generally and he is currently completing work on a long-term project which traces the relative failure of research within jurisprudence over the past 50 years to a larger crisis in the human sciences, a crisis which arises from the dramatic cultural changes that have marked the post-war era.

Singaporeans and Singapore laws should be more tolerant and sympathetic to foreigners particularly foreign talents working and learning here.

I say he should be fined only and not jail.

As long as you accept the PAPzis as the one true ruler of Singapore, their grace will save you.

Simon is also reviewing Resumes .

to make sure all facts are not faked .

If every FT believed that he would only be fined, and did not have to go to jail for assaulting taxi driver, or other locals for that matter, what would become of sinkie land? A place for FT to turn the country into their bushland or cowboy town, where their might, power, money and academic qualification, whether real, fake or degree milled, would be used to trample the locals under their feet.

Please, lah. Sinkie land is no more a colony of foreign masters, and all FT must be deported, regardless whether a law professor, a banker or a kacang puteh man, after serving his jail time. The pappies should keep FT if needed and who are decent people. If pappies still keep trash, the trash in sinkie land will just pile up. Imposing fine on these FT who are nothing more than hooligans and thugs? Be serious, man.

Make the country safe for everyone, taxi driver, women folks, children, etc. This is the basic obligation of an effective Govt. If pappies cannot do it, let opp parties do it.

Many Singapore taxi drivers treat their customers the passengers like shit so once in a while they deserved to be kicked.

Question is why we even a FT law lecturer in the first place?? No local talent??

FT law prof convicted of assault – what will NUS do?

Protected May 30th, 2015 | Author: Editorial

Convict, Sundram Soosay

NUS assistant law professor Sundram Peter Soosay was convicted by the court yesterday (29 May) of assaulting a 70-year-old cabby, Mr Sun Chun Hua, while drunk.

What started was Soosay vomited in Mr Sun’s taxi in the wee hours of Christmas Day in 2013. After he got out from the cab near King Albert Park, Soosay walked away without paying. Mr Sun ran after him. He then gave Mr Sun a $50 note.

As Soosay followed Mr Sun back to the cab to get change, he attacked Mr Sun from behind, punching him multiple times in the face and body. Mr Sun was left bloodied and in need of multiple stitches. Mr Sun earlier told the court that he had got his taxi licence in 1983 and this had never happened to him before.

District Judge Victor Yeo did not believe Soosay’s story that he was attacked by the cabby first and had reacted in self-defence. “I found it to be riddled with hindsight reasoning, convenient conjecture and hypothesis,” the judge said.

The judge said Soosay’s testimony was inconsistent with his first statement to the police. “Despite the accused’s intoxicated state, he seemed able to recall with great clarity how Mr Sun had behaved aggressively towards him.”
Soosay had not made any mention of those details in his first statement to the police. Instead, he told police he was so drunk that he could not remember what had actually happened.

The judge called Soosay’s allegation that the investigating officer had “compressed” his first statement “serious and most startling”. The investigating officer had been fully aware that Soosay was a law professor and would not have attempted to summarise his statement, the judge said.

Addressing the defence’s suggestion that the cabby had first attacked Soosay, the judge noted that it would be foolish for Mr Sun to do so especially after he had received the $50 note for the taxi fare from Soosay.

Sentencing has been scheduled on 26 June. Soosay could be jailed up to two years, fined up to $5,000, or both for assault.

He has been suspended from NUS but not fired.

Who is Sundram Peter Soosay?

Soosay is a Singapore permanent resident. He joined NUS in 2008.

He was originally from Malaysia and later moved to Scotland.

He graduated from Strathclyde University in Glasgow with a LLB, before going on to spend an extended period at Edinburgh University, where he obtained his LLM and PhD.

His research interests are in Jurisprudence and philosophy generally and he is currently completing work on a long-term project which traces the relative failure of research within jurisprudence over the past 50 years to a larger crisis in the human sciences, a crisis which arises from the dramatic cultural changes that have marked the post-war era [Link].

Interestingly, a check by TRE showed that neither universities attended by Soosay fall into the list of approved foreign universities [Link] recognised by the Ministry of Law for admission to the Singapore Bar (i.e, to practise as lawyers in Singapore). But in the case of Soosay, he is teaching students to become lawyers.

The ranking of his undergraduate university, Strathclyde University, incidentally falls somewhere between NUS/NTU and Mumbai University [Link]:
NUS – 22nd
NTU – 39th
Strathclyde University – 246th
Mumbai University – 551st

During an earlier court hearing of Soosay case, an NUS spokesman told the media, “NUS will await the conclusion of legal proceedings before determining what action, if any, should be taken.”

Now that Soosay has been convicted, it remains to be seen what action, if any, will be taken by NUS against him.
What do you think NUS will do? “Let’s move on”?

Could it be this brush with the law is partner his academy program?

One will assume that those who teach law will know and uphold the law .... not so in this case .... Law professor became hooligan when drunk ...and beat up poor cab driver.
