NTU dons allege bias
Coveted contract at centre of controversy

A GROUP of professors from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has raised a protest to varsity heads over the process of awarding tenure.

Unhappy about what they call a 'non-transparent' process, the group of about 10 has sent e-mail messages to the heads of their respective schools as well as to NTU provost Bertil Andersson, who has said the claims are baseless.

The group has also sought help from the Education Services Union (ESU), a body affiliated to the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) which was set up to promote good relations between employees of private education institutions and their employers.

However, the group was turned away because ESU can represent only bargainable employees, and university faculty members are considered non-bargainable staff. Instead, the ESU has referred the case to the Ministry of Manpower.

At the centre of the professors' complaint is something called the T65 contract, which guarantees them a place on the teaching staff till they hit the age of 65. It is the most coveted contract among professors.

More than a dozen professors have claimed that the selection process for the contract is 'biased and undemocratic'. Last year, 640 of NTU's 1,500 faculty members applied for the T65 contract. Of these, 55 per cent, or 352 professors, were awarded the contract.

What did the expect? Without that in place how to ensure academics toeing the line. A form of control to keep the intellectuals from being too vocal.

Imagine these nerds that are well past the prime of their lives and are forced to hack it in the real world outside the safety shelters of the university campus.

That's such a frightening thought. Eek!

why are they not happy with 'non-transparent' especially when they are living in a 'non-transparent' land in the 1st place?

if they are so concern with 'non-transparent', did they complain and write about GIC and GLC?

or their concern for 'non-transparent' only because they themselves are affected directly?

serve them right then.

These disgruntled engineers should band together with other disgruntled professionals like doctors, accountants, lawyers and architects, who some way or other have been screwed or have an axe to grind against the incumbent ruling party. It's easy to break a single chopstick, but not a big bunch of chopsticks. As long as they are credible and clean, they will stand a good chance if they form an opposition political party for the next election. No point joining an existing opposition party, they have too much political baggage.

Actually, I went to look at this Micheal Heng's website. He hardly has any quality publications to his name and his CV just keep stressing about irrelevant things (e.g. awarded Public Service Medal, in this school committee and that grassroots committee, etc.)

No quality research still want tax payers to support you for 10 more years?! NICE TRY.

Dumb professors.

Don't they know that it is so easy to get that T65 contract.

Jus come up with a thesis of how well Temasek has done all these years as compared to all other fund managers and highlight the positives that Ho Jinx has done even in the most difficult of economic conditions.

So difficult meh?
