NSP seems to be going down? Nicole Seah gone, now Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss, Ravi Philemon, Bryan Long, and Osman Sulaiman. SPP score some points here. They did not choose the WP, SDP, DPP or Singaporeans First party.

FORMER NSP MEMBERS APPLY TO JOIN SPP

At the Singapore People's Party's (SPP) first walkabout session this year in Bishan today, several former National Solidarity Party (NSP) members were seen joining them.

Former NSP secretary-general Mrs Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss and former co-opted CEC member Mr Ravi Philemon were joining SPP in their walkabout and they explained to the media that they had submitted their applications to join SPP and had submitted their resignations to NSP.

Other former NSP members also seen there today included Mr Osman Sulaiman and Mr Bryan Long.

They said that they are putting their support behind SPP and would be supporting them. It is understood that the applications to join the parties must be approved by SPP's Central Executive Committee.

Mrs Chong-Aruldoss, who was not voted into the NSP CEC in their recent party elections due to apparent disagreements about how the party should proceed to the next election, said that she would be supporting SPP even if she is not personally standing for election.

When Ravi Philemon was asked to comment on why he left NSP, he explained that it was not due to any bitterness but rather it was because he felt he could be more useful. He noted that his cause has not changed.

Political parties tend to embody a set of ideals and it is important for the views of members to roughly fall in line with that of the party. Especially in Singapore where the ruling party commands a great deal of power and opposition parties face a huge challenge to get into parliament, it is also important that party members are able to work well together and cooperate.

While some may criticise the switching teams as 'betrayal' or undecisivenes, others have pointed out that it is important that politicians and potential politicians are able to know what their views are and they should join the party which compliments their own directions.

If there is internal conflict within a party, it makes it even more difficult for them to be able to take on the PAP.

When asked to comment, Secretary-General of the SPP, Mrs Lina Chiam, explained that she welcomes the help of the new potential members but the party's CEC must give the final approval.

SPP is the only other opposition party other than WP which has a member in Parliament. Mrs Lina Chiam holds an NCMP position and they party also fared well in the previous elections, winning 43.07% of the votes in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC where their team faced the PAP team made up of Ng Eng Hen, Josephine Teo, Hri Kumar, Wong Kan Seng and Zainudin Nordin.
