Dear Friends,
NSP will be Launching the Indian Bureau soon. I will like to ask all Indian Singaporeans who want to become active engaged citizens, contributing to the debate & policy making process and ultimately, deciding the future direction of their country, to Come Join Us!
The Main Goals are to:
• Engage and Promote Active Citizenry among Indian Singaporeans
• Provide Alternative Platform to voice the hopes and aspirations of Indian Singaporeans
• Conduct Outreach Programmes/Events to benefit the Indian Community

Very NICE!!! I support this move. Its high time someone open up a bureau for the interest of Indians.

NSP plays racial politics with 2 of its Malay Bureau members launching police reports on racism issues and Hazel Poa issued a statement during the heat of the issue to score points with the electorate, thinking we are all 3 year old dumb children.

Now NSP wants to have Indian Bureau. Hell will break loose. Indians are generally not united, pardon me for saying that. There's the Tamils, Malayalamese, Sinkhs, North Indians, South Indians etc all fighting for their own interest.

Unless this Indian Bureau is only targeting the local Indians who felt threatened by the Foreign Indians, which is counter productive.

NSP is a party which takes advantage of racial sentiments.

Local Indians are united and i dont understand where you are coming from with that statement that they are all fighting for their own interest, What interest? Your statement defiantly holds no weight cos it simply doesnt make any sense, Im an indian and i have yet to see a separation mentality among local Indians in sg, maybe you a chinese can tell me? But I cant speak for those from India and local politics(Nsp Indian Branch) has got noting to do with India's politics or Indian foreigners in Singapore. Its all about the interest of Local indians as a whole, be it North or South. In my 28yrs as a living indian soul in sg i have yet to ever hear about hatred to other indians by my group of indians and i have never felt that im any different.. Indians in Singapore are United and Im proud of it, Indians will always help indians... AGAIN dont bring India OR those in India into the context.. Same case as Local chinese and PRC chinese who other then their skin color are totally different species.

Are we talking about Indians collective as a whole? which includes Tamils, Malayamese, Sikhs? And are we talking about local Indians, Foreign Indians or Indians collectively as a whole?

I know my true blue local born Indians (Tamils) friends are not comfortable with the influx of foreign Indians, especially unhappy with the Northern Indians. So what is NSP's Indian Bureau's aim? To unite all Indians in Singapore? When Shanmugam promoted Malayamse as a one of the national language recently, my tamil friend is not very happy about it.

If my facts are incorrect, please correct me.

Yes.. Im a north Indian/4gen Sinkie and we are not happy about the Foreigners from India as well be it North or South. Of cos when we are talking about domestic politics we are talking about local Indians collectively. I understand how the southerns are feelings cos a large no. of my local indian friends are southerns and N.Indian foreigners do have a so called "Air" and local Southerns feels threatened, i get that "Air" from N.Indian foreigners too even when im a North as well.

Malayalams are south Indians AND they form the 2nd biggest block after tamil, Shanmugan Idea was to allow Malayalams to take malayalam as a 2nd language just like North Indians in Sg are allowed to.. etc. Go to hindi school to study Hindi instead of taking up Tamil, chinese or malay as their 2nd language. He is not promoting the language to be one of the 4 National language of Singapore, He is not asking the language to put be added but he merely wants malayalams to be able to go to malayalams schools(For example i can choose not to take up Chinese, malay or tamil as my 2nd language at school, so during 2nd language period i can sit outside and do my own educating, then on the weekends i have to go to Hindi school and later on during my N/O levels, I can use Hindi as my 2nd language) and get educated in their own mother language as the language is diminishing at a very quick pace in Singapore so he wants to keep their culture and language going, Which is defiantly fair.

Nsp Indian branch has to defiantly be playing the Interest of local Indians collectively cos our I.C merely stats Indian, so if you north/south or whatever else you are still Indian.

The primary reason for a bureau is to represent the interests of a particular minority group. It is not like a women's wing or youth wing where the sheer numbers of these 2 categories make it necessary to create separate engagement platforms for the two. After all, half the world are women and at least one third of the world are youths.

I am sure the interests of Malays and Indians are very different, hence what the two bureaus have to represent will be very different if they are aiming for relevancy and not something else. Given that it had a Malay Bureau, the NSP was hardly championing for Malay interests during the 2011 GE. The real intention was something else, to attract minorities that thinks NSP cares for them, to attract them so they won't face a GRC issue. Such methods will bring you the minorities in number but those kinds that when there is no racism, will concoct or exaggerate racism to stoke their own egos as a champion of their community when the rest of their community are not bothered. This is why the 4-5 Malays most jumpy about the Donaldson issue, 3 were from NSP was no coincidence but natural result. In this region, Malays=Muslim. I am a Christian and will tell you that there is no religion more poked fun at than Christianity compared to any other in the world, including Islam, and you don't see us jump.

Thats how i see it too.. They are using these bureaus to bring in minority support but I am using them to make some Noise should Indian interest be disregarded. Just like how you have all those chinese clans who are taking care of the interest of chinese, We need as many of this "Groups" to champion the indian cause as well, But i highly doubt there will be a large block of supporters going to N.S.P just beacuse of this Indian Bureau, But i welcome this move to open up this Bureau.

Ah..Thanks for the clarification on the malayalam language aspect. I have this feeling it is going to be local Indians vs Foreign Indians, should the Indian Bureau be formed though

A Chinese clan is different from a Chinese wing in a political party. The best way I think minorities can progress is to work closely with the major races, rather than be isolated or chose isolation inside a bureau. For NSP's case, the success of the Malay Bureau was limited and I think not what they thought could have been better, but you can't say it didn't progress the party's minority composition even one tiny bit. But the little successes trade off with the risks. (Even the successes served little - 2 or 3 sleeping members from other parties crossing over, one of them, a Malay grad, was awarded cadreship for doing nothing). Real leadership will always measure pros and cons. That is why even the seemingly most progressive SDP doesn't have any racial bureaus.

The key point is, what will be the issues surrounding Indians in Singapore. Maybe you know.

It okay to have policy study group on minority issues just like similar groups specialising in healthcare, education etc. These can help the party formulate it policies and strategy.

But it a lousy idea to have a Bureau for Malay, Indian etc. What next? Maybe also a Bureau for Chinese, Eurasian. Chances are it will start to evolve in factionalism within the party.

Agree. The key is to look at how much roles minorities are given to play in a party. Ironically NSP has 2 Malay CEC, no Indians and none are key persons (SDP has a Malay chairman, formerly Indian chairman and 3 other Indians, WP 2 Malays including Malay vice chairman and one Sikh). But they have Bureaus. Although perhaps Bureaus does serve the purpose of having minorities occupy chairman, secretary titles that they may find pleasurable and ego-stoking to sit in.
