This is a wise move by Desmond and I guess, it is under Patrick's guidance.
DL has made a big blunder and created a PR disaster for himself as well as SPP when he tried to bring 30 of his people to the Party Congress. His personal image has... been damaged very badly when he does that, to be seen as someone who want to carry out a coup on his mentor, Uncle Chiam.
This is totally unacceptable in Asian society. People will see him as someone who is overly ambitious who does not play by fair rules.
His last public statement and now his willingness to step down as ASG would be a good attempt to salvage his image and moderate the damage done to his party as well. A very good move indeed.
