NSE: New North-South Expressway approved

THE green light has been given by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for the alignment of the North-South Expressway (NSE) between Admiralty Road West and Toa Payoh Rise.

The new expressway - with construction expected to start from 2013 and finish by 2020 - will run parallel to the Central Expressway (CTE) to serve the north-south corridor, as announced by the LTA on Wednesday.

Careful planning has been conducted to determine the alignment, planning and engineering requirements necessary to cater to the densely populated areas that the NSE will run through.

Efforts have been made to ensure minimal impact to the public.

Planning, engineering and alignment studies for the southern segment of the NSE are still ongoing.

When completed, NSE will be Singapore's 11th expressway. Now, the CTE - the only expressway serving the north-south corridor - experiences heavy traffic in the northern and central part of Singapore during peak hours. Even with the CTE widening project being completed by end 2011, traffic along this north-south corridor is expected to continue growing.

Agree. Not only uproot and get below market price for their house. What kills them is that property prices are going up, not down. What they get in compensation and what the market is offering now, they have to 'downgrade' - in terms of size and location of next purchase.

There's the political cost & there's the question of practicality.

I noticed that they've started working on the the road next to Marymount for a few months now, when they removed the petrol station that was there.

This expressway is going to cause heavy traffic along Thomson Rd where there's already heavy traffic. The stretch with all the florist, Polo Club, old Police Academy is already pretty bad now
