He says free trade pacts attract investments, Singaporeans still get top priority for jobs

Grace Ho
Senior Political Correspondent

At a time when protectionist sentiment is on the rise globally, Singapore must remain open to the world in order to attract investments and create good jobs for Singaporeans, Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said.

One factor that has played a part in the expansion of multinational companies here is the network of free trade agreements (FTAs) Singapore has with major trading partners.

These FTAs help create good jobs for Singaporeans, Mr Chan said, citing how resident workers employed as professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) rose from 1.12 million in 2014 to 1.3 million last year. Over this period, the share of PMETs among employed residents rose from 53 per cent to 58 per cent.

Clever word play. When it comes to statistics the word 'Singaporean" is replaced by the word "resident" which obviously includes PRs.

Given the fact that PR status is handed out on a platter to all and sundry one can only guess that they form such a large proportion of the totals that actual number of real Sinkies (ie those that have done NS) is minuscule and is the reason for avoiding the term "Singaporean" when it comes to the small print.

Of course if you ask for more detail the question will be answered with a question ie "what is the purpose of your question?".

Cree trade must be open to all.
Sinkies barred small time bum boats from neighbouring countries to trade,
In tbe old days, Singapore thrived on this business.

For Singapore to remain a vibrant economy, companies must be willing to set up shop here and more FDIs are always a welcome. Companies are not going to lose money when they do so, otherwise they will just pack up and leave after a few years of continuous losses because it'll become unsustainable and insensible to remain in Singapore, especially with its small domestic market. Just ask any company and almost all will tell you that they not here just only for the domestic market but mainly to cater to their exports.

Pure Singaporeans with the required skills are minimal and limited due to the low birth rate and also many of which are also working overseas. So, the next best solution is to have foreign talents. Otherwise, tell me what other better alternatives will there be?

That's why the crux is to give us what is actual figure, true local born and breed vs Permanent Residents.
Then we shall know the real story.
Let's hope the Real Oppo Leader will bring this up during House Talks.

Oppo already asked this question in the previous parliament. The answer was "what is the purpose of your question?".
