Woman fractures spine after Bukit Panjang lift shoots up and down several floors

SINGAPORE - A woman fractured her spine in yet another lift accident at an HDB block in Bukit Panjang on Tuesday (June 7), Channel NewsAsia reported.

The news agency quoted the 59-year-old victim's daughter Tracy Goh as saying that "when the lift reached the first storey, it shot up to the 11th, down to the third and back up to the 12th".

Ms Goh added that her mother, known only as Mdm Yeo, grabbed the railing but still fractured her spine because of the strong impact. Also, there was a gap between the lift and the floor which made it hard for rescuers to save Mdm Yeo afterwards.

Mdm Yeo, a part-time cleaner, was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and was warded overnight for observation, Channel NewsAsia said. She declined to be interviewed but her daughter said she was told to return for follow-ups and physiotherapy sessions.

According to Channel NewsAsia, Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council has been issued with a notice to suspend the operation of the lift at Block 150 Petir Road, and to appoint an authorised examiner to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

The town council also said in a statement that it would continue to offer assistance to Mdm Yeo.

The incident comes less than a month after an elderly man died when his mobility scooter toppled because the lift at the Pasir Ris HDB block where he lived was not level with the lobby floor.

In March, an Indonesian maid was trapped in a malfunctioning lift at Block 317 Ang Mo Kio Street 31 after it shot up to the 20th floor and stalled.

In January, months after an elderly woman had her hand severed by the doors of a lift in Jurong, a Punggol resident posted a video of a faulty lift he which continued to move even when one of its inner doors remained open.

Is it made in China?

It was made in China and serviced by Foreigh trash because the Town Council Mayor is busy collecting money from the people and has no time to inspect or maintain it. End result, haunted lifts in almost all PAP town. The dead is angry that PAP kept using lift upgrading carrot to threaten 70% citizens, thus you see such errie incidents everywhere to haunt the govt and its 70% stupid voters. 30% voters are spared from such nightmare.

Sengkang lifts 'rain' when it pours

RESIDENTS at a Housing Board flat in Sengkang have to use umbrellas in lifts that are said to leak when it rains, with some expressing safety concerns.

The elevators are in Block 433A, Sengkang West Way, Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday.

Mr Lai, a 65-year-old retiree, told Shin Min that it was "raining" in the lift some days back when there were heavy downpours in Sengkang.

He had been taking his grandsons home at about 5.30pm.

"The water kept dripping from the middle and both sides of the lift doors. I had to carry an umbrella even while taking the lift; it's unbelievable," said Mr Lai.

According to him, both lifts "leak" in this way.

Another resident, Mr Hong, a 49-year-old used car salesman, said he had also had a similar experience and had taken a photo of the "flooding" for evidence.

He added that fellow residents had encountered the damp lifts earlier in February, and he was worried that the leaks could pose an electrical hazard.

Other than the issue of leaking, the lift also indicates that it is overloaded even though there are only two people in it, Shin Min noted.

Mr Hong said: "The lifts here malfunction once or twice a month on average.

"I hope this can change."

Speaking to Shin Min, MP for Sengkang West, Lam Pin Min, said preliminary evaluations show that rain gets into the lift lobbies in times of heavy rain, and subsequently into the lift shafts.

The HDB is following up on this matter and looking into the installation of canopies to stop the rain from coming in.

Dr Lam added that the town council will also inform the cleaners to clear away the excess water so that it does not enter the lifts.

Lift maintenance has been in the spotlight recently.

A 78-year-old man died on Monday after he fell and hit his head while backing out of an HDB lift that was reportedly not level with the landing in Pasir Ris.
