Pawnshop worry

PAWNSHOPS like Maxi-Cash and Money Max are now actively advertising through the MediaCorp TV channels, encouraging people to pawn their valuables if they are in need of fast cash.
The irony is that these promotions together with the opening of more branches by the pawnshops coincide with the opening of the integrated resorts (IRs).
Are the pawnshops getting ready to make a fortune out of someone's misfortune? Are they expecting more people to gamble and get into financial difficulties?
It would not be surprising if more pawnshops started operating in the vicinity of the IRs to take advantage of gamblers in need of fast cash. There is nothing wrong with having pawnshops, but something is wrong when many branches start opening and actively promoting pawning for fast cash just when the IRs are opening.
I hope the authorities would look into the matter before the whole thing gets out of hand.
