With 353 or 1.20 per cent of the votes at the Punggol East by-elections, Reform Party’s Kenneth Jeyaretnam has been exposed as a political lightweight.

Jeyaretnam has gone from being one of the most promising names in local opposition politics to being a laughing stock.

By breaking with Opposition ranks and contesting in Punggol East, he has open the gates for Workers Party to move into West Coast GRC if Workers Party decides to expand their reach into the West.... He has effectively undermined his own party base......

Kenneth has now shown that he is in the same league as Desmond Lim. He polled double of Desmond's 168 votes.... both scored less than the 417 spoilt votes counted. Their parties are now seen as Micky Mouse parties worthy of a good laugh at best......

If Kenneth Jeyaretnam wants to advance the cause of the opposition in Singapore, perhaps the best thing he can do is to wind up his party and quit politics altogether. Either way, he would be an inconsequential figure in 2016.
