Somewhere off Changi PointSingapore, July 4, 2009 - This unique private dining experience, which incorporates a short bumboat ride from Changi and a trip back in time, merely requires a healthy appetite, an appreciation of nature, a sense of adventure – and some good sea legs.
The Tan family runs a floating fish farm in Singapore waters, and they also offer Teochew-style seafood to diners who are fortunate enough to be invited there. The menu may change each time you visit, but the seafood will remain – as might be expected – amazingly fresh.
The cooking method may be simple but the dishes are tasty – and guaranteed MSG-free.
A typical dinner for eight might include steamed line-caught garoupa, local clams cooked in homemade chili sauce, flower crabs cooked in a lighter-than-usual chili sauce, deep-fried prawn dumpling fritters, crab meat omelette, large steamed prawns, fried chicken cutlets and a Chinese-style seafood mee goreng.
A maximum of rustic charm and a minimum of fuss will accompany each meal. Diners can enjoy the gentle sea breezes, lights shimmering in the distance and the genuine no-frills environment while digesting the food and a lifestyle of a different kind.
The Tan family has been here for 20 years, and there is a definite sense of pride in the product. Not everything in the meal is produced in-house, but the quality is consistently good, the hosts are friendly – and the effect is simply magical.
