SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation has launched its first major public fundraising campaign in six years.

The charity stopped all fundraising activities in 2005 after a scandal involving its then CEO, T T Durai.

Instead of asking for donations to a general fund, the charity wants donors to sponsor the cost of an artificial kidney for patients.

The NKF has seen a 35 per cent increase in number of patients over the last five years, and it expects to handle more patients when times get tougher.

The NKF currently has 2,400 patients in its 24 centres and takes in about 300 new patients every year.

An artificial kidney or dialyser removes waste products and cleans a renal patient's blood during dialysis.

For 57-year-old Mok Heng Teck, whose kidneys failed 28 years ago, the artificial kidney is a life saver.

But it doesn't come cheap.

It could cost up to S$1,800 per month to use the machine for non-subsidised patients. Subsidised patients pay up to S$50 per month.

"We have to encourage people to help us. In order for us to sustain our life and our normal activity, we need people to support us in order to pay for the dialyser, because it's very expensive," said Mr Mok.

The artificial kidney is at the centre of the NKF's new year-long campaign, known as "Be an A.K. Giver".

The campaign is a combination of fundraising and also an attempt to increase public awareness about the importance of an artificial kidney.

For S$30, you can sponsor the cost of an artificial kidney, which can be used for about a month.

The majority of kidney patients require a new artificial kidney each month, while in more severe cases, some patients may require a new artificial kidney everyday.

NKF CEO Eunice Tay said she understands the public wants to know where and who the donations will go to, and explained that the NKF will be able to provide such details.

With the bleak economic outlook, NKF said it will be tough getting donations in the year ahead.

"It costs us over S$1 million a week to operate the NKF, and it is indeed going to be a real challenge to keep on having enough funds... So we'll have to keep thinking of how we can help the patients, using the help from the community," said Ms Tay.

Some 300 grassroots leaders from the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang constituency are chipping in to help needy patients.

Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio Yeo Guat Kwang has pledged to match their donations dollar-for dollar.

"I think it's also important for me as an adviser to mobilise my grassroots leaders by leading by example... to encourage all our grassroots to do our part so that every resident will also do their part," said Mr Yeo.

Their donation will benefit patients at the Hougang-Punggol Dialysis Centre.

The NKF hopes more people will come forward to help.

How many sob stories and fake tears this time?

Remember this? Back in 1995.

汪明荃 speaks better Mandarin than most Sinkies. :D

please donate.please please...my kidney is failing. please please donate!!!!!!!!!!!

I really dont understand how PAP manage the Singapore gov.
Malaysia can offer basic free medical and education. They dont spend much on army .
Singapore small country spending $12b/year on army. If cut 50%. It will enough to offer free basic medical and education for all.

STUNNING TRUTH: Dialysis in Malaysia!

Aiya ! Go to Malaysia lah. I even heard a Singaporean often made their way across the Causeway to get cheap kidney dialysis even WITHOUT any subsidy ! Why so expensive in Sinkingland ? NKF, go to hell !

Found this somewhere about Malaysia dialysis being
less than half price compared with Singapore.

Is this true?

How come everything in Singapore
so expensive?
-----------------------------------------
STUNNING TRUTH: Dialysis in Malaysia!

This one is a real STUNNER, I promise you! I found this out from a
Malaysian PR, but it is confirmed in today's forum page.

So we have the NKF that collects donations or if you don't like the
NKF, you can go to the KDF. Today's ST reveal more little facts:

1. The share of dialysis conducted by NKF has fallen to 44% from 50%.

2. Despite its reserves, many patients were turned away. Desperate some
of them die.

3. The other thing we already know the subsidy is only 23% -
unsubsidised patients pay $180-$280 per session.
subsidised patients about $130+

Yes we are told these are subsidised rates, so Singaporeans donate over
the last 37 years to NKF to 'help' less fortunate with kidney failure
live.

Do you know that there're no big time charity shows in Malaysia?
Why.....have you wondered why?! Why no charity shows, no crying
patients appealing for donations on TV, ,....nobody saying if you don't
help me I'll die? Why no news about people having kidney failure in
Malaysia in Straits Times? A country about many times our size must
need alot of money to care for its numerous kidney patients...the
financial resources they need must be enormous!?...

Do you know some Singaporean kidney patients go to Malaysia? I was told
this by a PR whose mother had Kidney problems, I simply couldn't
believe what he said until today.

Here is the stunner:

When a foreigner e.g. Singaporean goes to Malaysia to have his dialysis
at one of the very comfortable private clinics that is "profit
oriented", the NON-SUBSIDISED rate is RM$100 (S$45)!!!

For Malaysians, they pay a subsidised rate of less that S$15-S$23 per
session!! Those who are too poor, get free treatment.

Don't believe this, go read the Forum page in ST today!

We have a govt with $100B reserves, minister's that are paid $millions
claiming Singapore is a 1st world country. Yet, something as basic as
Kidney Dialysis for its citizens, they refused to solve the problem but
impose such high medical costs that some citizens who cannot afford it
simply die. They have to pass the responsibility to a charity
organisation that ended up deceiving the population squeezing it for
donations. This a sadder tale than we ever thought. This is what a govt
that run its affairs like a business and corporation can do to the
people.

Another interesting article in the Forum today, "To feel good
Singaporeans should compare themselves with Cubans"....ah yes, WE FEEL
SO GOOD NOW

There is no free lunch in Singapore. Don't want Sinkies to develop the 'crutch mentality'. Everything must be pegged to market rates, even kidneys, hospital beds, wedding rings and coffins. We don't want Sinkies dying of renal failure to ask the government for kidney handouts!

If defence budget is cut then how can Singapore defend itself against evil Muslim neighbors who maliciously keep providing us with their water, electricity, natural gas and money? Singapore is the Israel of the East, we must do Total Defence!
