Raytheon's Amy Cohen provides an update on the newest version of the SM-3 missile defense interceptor, the Block IIA. The company says the missile will be deployed to the U.S. fleet this year.
WASHINGTON — A test shoot of the SM-3 Block IIA fired from an Aegis Ashore test site in Hawaii failed Wednesday, CNN has reported. The missile is designed to intercept ballistic missiles.
If confirmed, it would mark the second unsuccessful test of the Raytheon missile in the past year. It also deals a setback to U.S. missile defense efforts as North Korea makes seemingly daily progress on it goal of striking the U.S. mainland with nuclear-armed missiles.
When reached for comment, U.S. Missile Defense Agency spokesman Mark Wright declined to comment on the outcome of the test.
“The Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Navy sailors manning the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex (AAMDTC) conducted a live-fire missile flight test using a Standard-Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday morning,” Wright said.
CNN was first to report the failed test.
Its important to note that a number of factors apart from the missile could be to blame for the failed test. The targeting and fire control radars, or the Navy’s AEGIS system could also have caused the failed test.

An SM-3 Block IIA test in June failed after a sailor on the destroyer John Paul Jones mistakenly triggered the missile’s self-destruct mechanism.
The missile successfully intercepted a ballistic missile target last February in a test launch. The missile is being developed by Raytheon and is a joint project between the U.S. and Japan, designed to counter rising missile threats from North Korea and elsewhere.

Aegis Ashore-launched SM-3 Block IIA fails to intercept target in BMD test
Michael Fabey, Washington, DC - Jane's Defence Weekly
01 February 2018
A Raytheon Standard Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA interceptor failed to hit its target during a ballistic missile defence (BMD) test off the coast of Hawaii on 31 January, the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) said.
The BMD systems and tests for the Aegis Ashore systems’ SM-3 interceptors are jointly operated by the MDA and the US Navy (USN).
USN officials directed all enquiries about the test and any possible failure to the MDA, whose spokesman, Mark Wright, said only that MDA officials and USN sailors “manning the Aegis Ashore Missile Defence Test Complex [AAMDTC] conducted a live-fire missile flight test using a Standard-Missile-3 Block 2A missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday morning”.

An Alabama-made missile reportedly failed to intercept an incoming target during Wednesday testing over Hawaii.
Citing administration officials, CNN reports the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA, designed to intercept ballistic missiles, did not successful hit its target. If confirmed, the test would be the second unsuccessful trial for the Raytheon-made missile in the past year.
The first failure was blamed on human error after a sailor accidentally identified the target as "friendly," causing the SM-3 to self-destruct.
The U.S. Missile Defense Agency has not confirmed the failure of Wednesday's test but say a trial took place.
"The Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Navy sailors manning the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex (AAMDTC) conducted a live-fire missile flight test using a Standard-Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday morning," Wright said.
The SM-3 IIA is developed and manufactured by Raytheon at its facilities on Redstone Arsenal. It successfully intercepted a ballistic missile target last February in a test launch.
The latest missile test comes just weeks after a scare in Hawaii when a state Emergency Management Agency employee mistakenly sent an alert warning of an imminent incoming ballistic missile attack. The false warning, which comes amid continued tensions with North Korea, set off panic on the islands.
