Whether Christians like to admit it or not, God prescribed the death penalty for leading others into apostasy.

This is one of the most difficult OT verses to grasp let alone explain. For example, why did the enticer have to be put to death? Why not just talk the enticer out of his bad idea? Or give him a warning? Or a beating?

IMO it's because the Israelite national identity was based on the worship of God, (while the national identity of other nations was based on the worship of their gods). So any Israelite who was guilty of enticing Israelites to worship the gods of foreign nations was, in addition to leading people away from the worship of the True God, was also undermining the Israelite nations identity.

Note that the Law states that a person is in trouble if he secretly entices his brother to worship other gods NOT if he secretly worships foreign gods. The latter is a personal sin that God will punish the individual for later on earth or in the afterlife. But the former is a bigger sin that threatens to corrupt all of society.

If there was no punishment for it, then here's what would have happened:

• The enticer first leads his brother astray into worshiping some foreign god, X.
• Then the brothers go and entice their friends into worshiping X.
• Then the friends get their friends and families to join the club.
• Then all of them become organized and soon they're proselytising for X within the land of the Israelites.
• Then they'll build a temple for X
• Then they'll demand equal representation in political and cultural matters.
• Then they'll say they don't have to obey the Laws of God because they go against their religious beliefs. Or they'll demand the "right" to do things forbidden by God. For example, "It's our right to be able to toss babies into the furnace because our god X calls for it".
• Radical X-ites may pledge allegiance to the land where X originated or will make demands, for example, "open up the borders to welcome X worshipers from everywhere".
• Then spies and hostiles from X-land will walk freely in the Israelite nation and do as they please.
• X-ites in the government will accept bribes from X-land and work for the benefit of X-land, and not the Israelite nation.

It doesn't even end with X. The precedent would have been set for Israelites to proselytise for other gods A, B, C, D and so on. The Israelite nation would no longer remained dedicated to the One God but would have devolved into a melting pot of strange foreign religions that are at odds with the God of moses.

All that because of that one guy who thought it would be good idea to get his brother into the worship of X.

Thus, the best solution was to nip the problem in the bud and get rid of the enticer. Giving him a warning or a beating may not have sufficed. Because as the passage says, he operated in SECRET. If his brother tells him to get lost, he'll go somewhere else and entice someone else and the exact same things would follow.

Actually, they aren't. Hadiths are needed because the qurans are short books, barely 10% of the Bible in volume, and still have chapters devoted to cursing mahomet's uncle for rejecting mahomet.

For our thread discussion, moslem scholars follow the hadiths and reject the quran in how to deal with apostates.
