NYPD Cop ‘Assassinated’ in The Bronx While Sitting in Marked Police Vehicle

by Associated Press

A New York City police officer was shot to death early Wednesday, ambushed in a marked police truck and "assassinated in an unprovoked attack" by a man with a revolver who was later killed by officers, police said.

Officer Miosotis Familia, a 12-year member of the department, was wrapping up her shift when the man fired one round through the passenger-side window and struck her in the head. She was rushed to a hospital but did not survive.

"This was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe," Police Commissioner James O'Neill said, calling it an assassination.

Her partner radioed for help.

"Shots fired! 10-85!" the officer is heard frantically shouting after the gunfire, including the code for an officer down. "My partner's shot! My partner's shot! My partner's shot! Hurry up central!"

Officers responded fast, and caught up to the suspect, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, about a block away, police said. As they confronted him, he pulled a revolver, and police fired, striking and killing him. A silver revolver was found at the scene. A bystander was hit in the stomach by a bullet during the standoff and is in stable condition, police said.

Familia had been stationed in a mobile command post, a RV-sized truck used as a communications hub during major events, like the Fourth of July. She had been looking down, writing in her memo book, a police log where officers record their shift activity, when Bonds walked up.

Bonds, who also went by John Bonds, had been on parole for a robbery case in Syracuse, New York, but was from the Bronx, police said. He is seen in surveillance footage marching up to the post "with purpose," officials said, but it's not clear what provoked the attack.

The shooting recalled the Dec. 20, 2014 killing of patrol officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were ambushed and shot to death in their vehicle without warning by a man who approached the passenger window of their marked police car. The suspect, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then fatally shot himself. Brinsley announced online in the moments before the shooting that he was planning to shoot two "pigs" in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, speaking at the hospital before she died, asked that the city keep her in their thoughts.

"She was on duty serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in and doing the job she loved," he said. "And after this shocking and sudden attack, her fellow officers came to her aid immediately."

Officers saluted at attention outside the Bronx hospital as the ambulance and police motorcade escorted Familia's body from the hospital. Familia had three children and had been a member of the anti-crime unit.

"Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform every day and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx," said Patrolman's Benevolent Association president Patrick Lynch.

The Bronx neighborhood was blocked off with police tape as officers investigated the deadly shooting. Police were combing for any other surveillance footage and talking to witnesses.

Witness Jay Marzelli told the Daily News of New York he thought the shots Wednesday were fireworks at first.

"I was in this bodega right here on Creston, just getting a sandwich and all of a sudden there was all this running and stuff going on, and I look out probably 40, 50, 60 cops screaming, 'Call a paramedic, clear the block!'" he said. "It looked like there was a riot going on, and two seconds later I hear gunshots, 'Bam, bam,' and then the police officer was just laying there."

The NYPD cop-killer fatally shot by police Wednesday was a parolee who once assaulted an officer with brass knuckles and recently unleashed a vile anti-cop Facebook rant, according to sources and authorities.

Alexander Bonds, 34, littered his social media presence with selfie videos and meme shares — and in September posted a profanity-laced Facebook Live clip spewing venom at cops.

"Police is f----ts, and this ain't no gimmick," he said at the top of the 11-minute video.

Bonds, waving a lit cigarette, appeared to be upset by a story of a cop allegedly raping a girl. He went on to air several grievances against law enforcement, including those who work in jails.

"Don't think every brother, cousin or uncle you got that get (unintelligible) in jail is because of a Blood or Crip," he said. "Police be killing and saying an inmate killed them."

"I wasn't a b---h in jail and I'm not gonna be a b---h in these streets," he continued the rant. "They don't f--k with me, and I damn sure don't f--k with them."

He later charged: “That’s where your taxpayer money be going, to pay off your own people being murdered."
In what a police source called "nothing less than an assassination," an NYPD officer was fatally shot while sitting in her vehicle in the Bronx on July 5, 2017. Miosotis Familia, 48, was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital after she was gunned down around 12:30 a.m. The suspect was later killed by police.

"N----s ain't taking it no more, Mr. Officer," he closed out the video. "I'm here to tell you man. ... just keep your a-- away from mine."

Police gunned down Bonds after he shot 48-year-old Officer Miosotis Familia in the head about 12:30 a.m. in the Bronx. The 12-year veteran of the force, who was sitting in a mobile command post, later died at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Bonds strode toward the police vehicle in Fordham Heights “with purpose,” a police source told the Daily News, before he shot a single round into the vehicle. Commissioner James O’Neill called the early-morning assault “an unprovoked attack on police officers.”

The shooter, who’d juggled up to six different aliases, had a criminal record that included assaulting a cop with brass knuckles, a police source said. His last known address was in the Bronx.

Bonds spent seven years in Attica Correctional Facility on a robbery conviction from Onondaga County, N.Y., before receiving parole on May 5, 2013. He was on supervised release until May 15, 2018.

He was previously sent on March 31, 2004 to Moriah Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in connection with a drug sale conviction out of the Bronx — receiving parole on Oct. 14, 2004.

He “liked” the Facebook page “Return Judy Clark to Our Community” — an advocacy page for Judith Clark, a Weather Underground member convicted of felony murder in the 1981 Brink’s armored car heist that killed a security guard and two Nyack, N.Y. policemen.

Clark, working in cahoots with the Black Liberation Army, served as a getaway driver in the Rockland County murder. Gov. Cuomo in late December granted her clemency, moving her parole date up 40 years.

Bonds in September shared a viral video of a female police officer getting into a heated scuffle with a teenage boy on a bicycle. He added a comment apparently critical of the cop.

He’d also taken online quizzes running the gamut from “What’s deadly about you?” to “Which magical forest creature are you?” and had recently shared a viral video of a man breaking up a fight between two schoolchildren with a peaceful message.

“Good morning everyone I want to thank God for see another year it ain’t been a easy ride when has it that’s what I respect the most,” Bonds posted Dec. 31.

“Just few years ago I was in the devil house I truly thank the man for his help and the people that was put in to my life to get it right.... Happy New year eve blessing to all be safe out here.”
