SINGAPORE — A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national was caught on Tuesday (Oct 27) while trying to swim to Malaysia, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and the Singapore Police Force said on Thursday.
The man, who had overstayed in Singapore, was first sighted in the Straits of Johor swimming towards the water pipeline alongside the Causeway. ICA and Police Coast Guard (PCG) officers later located the man underneath the water pipeline.
Two other male Bangladesh nationals, who were acting as lookouts were also arrested by authorities. The two men, aged 34 and 37, had been found by PCG patrol officers in the vicinity of the Causeway and were stopped during a routine check.
The 30-year-old swimmer could face up to six months in jail and a minimum of three strokes of the cane for overstaying in Singapore. His accomplices face a jail term of between six and 24 months, and fined up to S$6,000.
