New wireless transfer
<!-- by line --> By Chua Hian Hou
A NEW made-in-Singapore invention will allow photobugs to transfer images and video from digital camera to camera wirelessly. The FluCard, announced on Wednesday by local tech company Trek 2000 - the company which patented the now-ubiquitous ThumbDrive portable USB flash drive a decade ago - is a storage card with built-in WiFi connection. When the card, which is the same size as the popular SD card used by most camera vendors, is inserted into a camera, the user will be able to access the software in the card to look for a wireless network or another FluCard in the vicinity. Once connected, the FluCard, which Trek's engineers developed over six years at the cost of US$6 million (S$8 million), will allow users to send pictures to another FluCard-equipped camera or upload pictures or video to Trek's website, where others will be able to download them, said Trek chief executive Henn Tan.
Trek's new invention, which will go on sale here within the next couple of months, has already attracted the attention of Japanese tech giant Toshiba Corporation. Toshiba, said its strategic business development head Hiroto Nakai, has appointed Trek to make an undisclosed number of cards, and 'will lead the formation of a consortium to support the distribution of the FluCard and oversee the intellectual property protection over this new invention. 'The consortium members will comprise the world's leading photographic equipment manufacturers from Japan,' said Mr Nakai, adding that several of which have already signed on the dotted line although he declined to name them at this point in time.
