The Royal Thai Navy will today add a new vessel to its fleet.
Built at a cost of 4.94 billion baht in Singapore, HTMS Ang Thong is intended to serve as a support vessel for the navy's aircraft carrier, HTMS Chakri Naruebet which has been in service for about 15 years.
HTMS Ang Thong, a landing platform dock ship built by Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd, is expected to arrive in Sattahip district of Chon Buri today.
The core future mission of HTMS Chakri Naruebet will be to assist in operations to rescue victims of disasters at sea.
The new ship has a displacement of about 7,600 tonnes and can reach a maximum cruising speed of 20 knots. The vessel will be able to stay at sea for at least 45 days and can carry about 500 personnel.
HTMS Ang Thong has a flight deck that can accommodate two Sea Hawk helicopters or one CH-47 Chinook.
The ship's deck can also carry up to 15 M60 Patton main battle tanks or 19 amphibious assault vehicles.
Its well dock has stern and side ramps for the quick embarkation or disembarkation of troops and equipment.
HTMS Ang Thong is also equipped with two landing craft. Each are 13 metres long and can carry as many as 36 troops.
The vessel's armaments include systems using technology from Denmark, Italy and Britain. The official welcoming ceremony for the new ship will be held on Thursday.
