New OBU by LTA represents everything wrong with our government

ask any driver and he will tell you having a 15cm x 8cm (120 cm2) screen mounted near the A-pillar is going to obstruct his vision and be a driving hazard. how disingenuous is Amy Khor trying to be in saying the units are almost the same size. the exisiting IUs only block up 8cm x 3cm (24 cm2) of screen space, 5 times less than the new OBU.

shit for brains all round in the team that led the redesign of the OBU. Amateur hour at the LTA. No wonder the last transport minister stepped down.

In what was described as a "show-and-tell" by an MP, Dr Khor held up a model of today's in-vehicle unit (IU) and the new OBU to show that the new unit is only marginally bigger.

The OBU display unit is 15cm x 8cm x 2cm, while the IU is 12cm x 8cm x 3cm.

There remain concerns, however, that the way the units are mounted on the windscreen could affect drivers' visibility.

Dr Khor said the current ERP system is getting increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain and so "there is an urgency, a need to implement the next-gen ERP" without introducing further changes that could upset the timeline.

If the ERP is not feasible, then go back to the good old days....

Cars should be banned. Everyone should be using a PMD instead.

Ask for feedback when they don’t want to change anything. Haha... that’s so sg govt.

it would have been a no-brainer to come up with 3 designs and let the public choose/review before the tender. or to do a trial run with beta testers before deciding.

none of this happened based on the news reports trickling out.

but this was from a government that thought it knew best. new MoT should have reviewed the OBU program before launch.

now half a million car owners will be constantly reminded of the pig-headedness of the authorities in forcing this white elephant into their cars.

at least with the existing IU, it is a unique piece of kit that works well without bloatware.

That would be a waste of time. Better to let the pre-approved crony implement his solution before going through the charades of the so-called tender.

That's the efficiency of a one party bao gar liao govt.

I would have no beef if the crony had a good solution to implement, instead we get stuffed with an OBU designed by amateur hour.

and I bet that LCD screen is going to fail often under our tropical operating conditions.

we have reached the point of diminishing returns with this bao gar liao government.

"The LTA will offer vehicle owners a few options to gather feedback on, for instance, what is to be shown on the OBU touchscreen display."

Hobson's Choice
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobson's_choice

Remember, the PAP govt always pretends to be a consultative govt by 'seeking public feedback' before implementing something that's potentially unpopular or controversial. But the decision has already been made.

Examples:
Public feedback sought ahead of Budget 2020

Law Ministry launches public feedback exercise on moves to uncouple Bar admission and practice training

Public feedback wanted on nomination of Botanic Gardens for World Heritage Site

There are many, many more examples over the years but you get the idea.

Lee Kuan Yew > Quotes

“I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn't be here today. And I say without the slightest remorse, that we wouldn't be here, we would not have made economic progress, if we had not intervened on very personal matters - who your neighbour is, how you live, the noise you make, how you spit, or what language you use. We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.”
― Lee Kuan Yew

After living in NZ for many years I can now vouch for the fact that LKY's doctrine is correct.

In NZ the government implements what the majority want and the fate of the nation is decided by those with IQs of 100 and below instead of by smart people.

One party govt always results in the trashiest form of govt.

Before you porlumpar PAP apologists claim that this arrangement brings stability and efficiency... stability and efficiency are double-edged swords. Be very careful of what you wish for.
