"IT IS welcome news that Singapore and Malaysia have agreed on a high-speed rail link between the Republic and Kuala Lumpur ("S'pore to KL in 90 minutes by rail"; Wednesday).
The location of the station in Singapore is important.
Many people choose to go to Kuala Lumpur by coach not only because of the lower price, but also because flying there may take a longer time as the airport is sited far away from the central districts. Taxi journeys, check-in and boarding add to the time taken.
The station in Singapore should be sited at the architecturally significant old train station in Tanjong Pagar, which is close to Singapore's Central Business District and the tourist attractions in Marina Bay and Sentosa.
Currently, the land corridor exists from there to Johor Baru, and new tracks capable of handling the high-speed trains can be laid down without knocking down existing buildings.
This would make more sense than siting the terminal station in Woodlands, where even with an MRT station, there is much hassle involved in switching trains.
