Reported in Todayonline :

They might be newbies on the political scene but that did not stop two members on the Singapore People's Party (SPP) Central Executive Committee from being appointed as office bearers for the first time (corrected at 5:20PM, Aug 17).

Product design manager Wilfred Leung has become SPP's new assistant secretary-general, taking over from Mr Desmond Lim Bak Chuan, who had long been Mr Chiam See Tong's right-hand man.

After SPP's two-hour long office-bearer selection meeting last night, Mrs Lina Chiam - who became the second vice-chairman, a newly-created post - said Mr Leung was selected because he "has been found to be very cooperative and very helpful, doing a lot of constituency work" since he emerged as a campaign manager during the last elections in 2006.

Asked if the 35-year-old is the eventual successor to secretary-general Mr Chiam, she said: "We'll give him a chance to help Mr Chiam and see how it goes ... in the long run."

Mr Chiam said: "The meeting went quite well. I'm quite happy with the results."

Mr Lim, who will not hold any post as a council member, told MediaCorp he was nominated to remain in his previous post, but withdrew "to give the younger members a chance to prove themselves".

On perception that a rift is forming within SPP, party chairman Sin Kek Tong said: "Impossible. Everything is settled." Teo Xuanwei

Looks like the internal split is real in SPP, DL is now no more Ass SG of SPP...

Agree. There was obviously a contest. DL lost to WL. But this is good PR. And better if they really move on.

Next year will be SDA council's election. Hope they put it off and wait until after election.

IMHO, Desmond got no future in SPP, as long as the Chiam family is holding the fort in SPP. Things got ugly, and i don't see there's any way back for Desmond. It's too near election time for Desmond to jump ship, hopefully he'll put up a strong fight in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and show the Chiams what he's capable of.

There isn't a need to jump ship. SPP and SDA are like a Lower House and an Upper House respectively. There is more support for the Chiams in the Lower House (SPP) but more support for DL in the Upper House (SDA) due to DL's regular engagement of PKMS members.

Either way both Chiams and DL get (nearly) what they want. SDA would field DL in PRP GRC and Chiams in whereever they want to go (or risk losing SPP and the Chiams by having them pull out of SDA).

However, there's a risk that they still want to slug it out. That is why it's better for them to hold off the SDA election for their own sake.
