they are doing very well at TP
Of course when the Malaysian Gov't is practically giving them free plus ample land at an a giveaway price. Singapore can never be able to top that. It does not make business sense for Singapore to better that kind of offer. Without their major 2 customers, TP is nothing.
They have specific advantages
Both these shippers are laughing all the way to the bank.
so they made the right choice to move to TP?
Yes definitely. Good for them and also good for Singapore and the importance of maintaining and servicing their existing customers.
Can such incentives be duplicated in other areas that will cause new challenges to SG?
During Mahathir's tenure, the acrimonious and uneasy relationship he has with Singapore did not foster much co-operation between the 2 nations. Hence the many troubling issues remained unresolved. It warmth during Pak Lah's term but he had too many distractions plus the lack of support and was not an able leader. Now it is Najib and I think he will carry on with what Pak Lah had intended where Singapore all along. This the byword is co-operation rather than competing head on for the leaders must have concluded that together both nations has much to gain by joining hands, each lending their strengths to forge ahead in this challenging times. I am sure you will agree we are in a much better position with Malaysia on our side rather than as a competitor.
good account of the past..
another possibility is "succumbing to blackmail!!!"
Possibly, as I do suspect Singapore SS do monitor VVIP's when they visit Singapore, official or otherwise. Nothing can escape the eyes of the government, unless they are inept such as when MAS Selamat did eluded them. That episode could be an isolated incident and should not be construed as normal.
For his own survival, a leader can give in to blackmail. we will not know..so dont read too much on the surface
So you do believe that the Singapore gov't has some kind of hold on him?
anything is possible
my last word in this, that BN's (UMNO) interests is to ensure that Johor, their birthplace and their stronghold remained in their hands. Johor's well-being and prosperity relies heavily on Singapore. In a nutshell, if Johor is no longer as prosperous, chances are, BN might lose a portion or all of their support. Should Johor fall, BN will effectively lose Malaysia.
Many Singaporeans are buying homes in Johor and there are talks of having an underground tunnel linking the 2 countries. Add Iskandar Malaysia (IM) and the current boom that Johor enjoys because of Singapore, why would Najib repeat what his mentor Mahathir advocate? In the last Malaysian Elections, BN lost so many seats in Peninsula Malaysia to the PKR coalition including Selangor and Penang each being very rich States.
So whatever the cause, be it blackmail or otherwise, it certainly make good sense to be on good terms with Singapore and come out a winner.
